The Art of Shaving X Seattle Gents

If there’s one ritual that every man knows about and that we all have to go through at some point in our lives that’s shaving. When I was younger, I wouldn’t grow any facial hear and it took me years for it to start coming in. It wasn’t until probably my sophomore year in college that it started growing and that’s when shaving became a very important part of my life. Once you start to shave you feel like you’ve taken that step towards manhood and with it, comes the struggle (and sometimes pain) of not doing it correctly, or with the right products, or in the right way. I eventually just started avoiding shaving, because it would make my face red, feel irritated, or flare up with pimples. I began to grow a beard and since then, I’ve mostly just groomed and trimmed it with very few occasions where I do shave it off completely.

The other day, the Seattle Gents and I got invited to one of the flagship stores in Seattle from The Art of Shaving, mainly to get to see the store, test some of their products, and get a small demonstration of how to do a good shave. My friends Avi and Antonio organized this gathering with Esther Blume’s mentoring, from Uncommon Cartography, and we were able to see and experience the store in downtown Seattle. Something really cool about these stores is that they all try to resemble that original first store in New York, where the company started. There’s this almost Mad Men-like look and feel to it, and the store has a barber’s room in the back with a genuine barber leather chair, photographs and paintings depicting New York City and artifacts related to shaving, and a very wide array of products designed to appeal the modern stylish man.

During our visit, we also were given a small demonstration of how to do the right shave. There’s 4 main steps to shaving (of which I only knew one before) that you should perform to get that perfectly clean cut: prepare, lather up, shave, and moisturize. The Art of Shaving provides kits with products that you need for each one of those phases, and we also learned some really cool things about shaving. For instance, we learned that the shave should be done with the grain and not against the grain, which would sound counterintuitive, but it’s better for your skin. We also learned that it’s paramount to use lotion before even getting to the point of shaving, and that the right way is to put a small amount on your hands and to pat your skin gently, to open the pores. The last thing is that the brush you use for lathering is really important, and that you should get it really wet first before applying the shaving cream so that you don’t damage it or your skin. After the demonstration which was performed on our friend Anthony’s hand, we had the chance to look at other products and test them out. And if shaving is not for you (like in my case) there’s a whole section dedicated to grooming a beard with beard waxes and beard oil, trimmers, and other lotions.

Si hay un ritual del cual todo hombre sabe algo acerca de y que todos tenemos que pasar por el durante algún punto en nuestras vidas es afeitarse. Cuando era joven, no me salía vello facial y me tomó años en que me empezara a salir barba y bigote. No fue hasta probablemente mi segundo año de carrera que este empezó a crecer y ese fue el momento en el que rasurarme se convirtió en una parte muy importante de mi vida. Una vez que uno se empieza a afeitar uno siente que ya dio ese gran paso hacia la edad adulta como hombre, y con ello viene la molestia (y a veces con dolor) de no hacerlo correctamente, o utilizando los productos adecuados, o de la manera adecuada. Eventualmente comencé a evitar rasurarme principalmente porque hacía que mi cara se pusiera roja, se sintiera irritada u ocasionaría que me salieran muchos barros y espinillas. Empecé a crecerme la barba desde entonces y desde ahí principalmente mi cuidado personal es cortarla y mantenerla en forma con muy pocas ocasiones en las que me rasuro por completo.

El otro día, los Seattle Gents y yo fuimos invitados a una de las tiendas insignia en Seattle de The Art of Shaving, principalmente para echarle el ojo a la tienda, probar algunos de sus productos y ser partícipes de una pequeña demostración de como afeitarse correctamente. Mis amigos Avi y Antonio organizaron esta reunión junto con la ayuda de Esther Blume, de Uncommon Cartography, y pudimos ver y experimentar la tienda en el centro de Seattle. Algo muy interesante sobre estas tiendas es que todas intentan parecerse a aquella tienda donde todo empezó en la ciudad de Nueva York, que es de donde proviene esta compañía. Tiene esta sensación como de Mad Men, y la tienda tiene un cuarto atrás con barbería donde uno puede encontrar una silla de piel auténtica de barbero, fotografías y pinturas de la ciudad de Nueva York y de artefactos relacionados con la afeitada y una amplia gama de productos diseñados para el hombre modern que quiere verse bien.

Durante nuestra visita, nos dieron una pequeña demostración de cómo lograr la afeitada perfecta. Primeramente, hay 4 pasos para la afeitada (de los cuales yo sólo conocía uno antes) que uno tiene que realizar para obtener ese corte al raz y perfecto: preparar, enjabonar, afeitar y humectar. The Art of Shaving provee de kits de productos que necesitas para cada una de esas fases y también aprendimos un par de cosas nuevas acerca de la rasurada. Por ejemplo, aprendimos que, contraintuitivamente, el resurado se debe de hacer a favor de la raíz del pelo y no en contra, ya que es mejor para tu piel. También aprendimos la importancia que tiene el usar loción de afeitar antes de empezar el rasurado, y que la manera correcta de hacerlo es poner una pequeña cantidad en tus manos y palpar suavemente la piel para abrir los poros. La última cosa que aprendí es que la brocha que utilizas para enjabonarte es muy importante y que se debe de llenar de agua primero, aplicar la crema en el centro para no dañarla y frotarla contra la cara suavemente para no dañar la piel. Después de la demostración que le hicieron a nuestro amigo Anthony en su mano, tuvimos la oportunidad de ver algunos de los productos y probarlos. Y si la afeitada no es lo tuyo (como en mi caso) también tienen una sección dedicada al cuidado de la barba con ceras para barba, aceites, rasuradoras y otras lociones.
