The Bloedel Reserve

Hello my friends! Another week of summer has gone by, and with it, short-sleeve t-shirts, shorts, open shoes with no socks, and light colors have arrived and they’re here to stay. It’s incredible how fast this year is going; we’re a little bit past the first half already and it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating New Year’s and making all those New Year resolutions. You might have noticed my cadence on the blog has changed to once-every-two-weeks now. This is just temporary, and it’s mainly due to the fact that I’ve been crazy busy lately and I haven’t been able to set out on blogging adventures as frequently as I used to during the rest of the year. Hope you haven’t been missing me for long, and soon I’ll get back to the weekly posts so just bear with me a few more weeks.

One of the reasons I’ve been super busy this past month is because of intern season at Microsoft. I love it when the interns are here! It’s one of my favorite times of the year because it coincides with that time when the weather gets really nice, and also, thanks to the Intern Social Club program at work, I get to hang out with them a lot and get to organize events for them and go to cool parties. Having been an intern twice, I know this experience can be a bit challenging and frightening at times, since for some it’s their first time away from home. That’s why I love helping out to make this their best summer yet and why I love to get involved with the ISC program, to make them feel they have good friends and a family here at Microsoft. Not gonna lie, it keeps my schedule busy but I really, really like it.

About two weekends ago, a (really good-looking!) group of interns, my blog BFFerboo Kim from HelloKimWin, and I embarked on a Saturday morning stroll to the beautiful Bloedel Reserve in Bainbridge Island. My Seattle friends, if you ever want to try a super cool, one-day adventure in the Pacific Northwest you can’t miss out on this gorgeous natural gem just 30 miles away from Downtown Seattle. We got to ride the ferry as well, since you need to cross Elliot Bay to get there, and with it being just an $8 fare roundtrip, it was totally worth it! The Bloedel Reserve used to be a private home and garden to Mr. and Mrs. Bloedel, two naturalists for life that decided to preserve this area. Under the influence of the conservation movement and Asian culture, they yearned to capture the tranquility and naturalness of Japanese gardens (the reserve itself contains a Zen garden within) and they managed to keep the place almost intact for over 50 years. In 1970 the reserve was donated to the University of Washington and now the reserve is open to visitors from all over the US and the world.

For our weekend stroll in the Bloedel Reserve, we decided to wear warm, summery clothes to celebrate the arrival of the summer season. Some of the highlights you can see in these photos are the use of light colors, such as white, blush, and baby blue, along with light jackets and denim shirts. One really interesting fact is that for this trip we didn’t coordinate outfits that much! We had lots of variety of textures and patterns (Kim and Emily coincidentally decided to wear stripes) and also there was the presence of flowers, which can be seen in Elise’s romper and Kim’s amazing floral shorts. Teal was donning a one-of-a-kind, blush pink dress that was, wait for it, designed and crafted by her own sister! And Henry and I both decided to wear white chinos, which are perfect for a boating occasion and look fresh and comfortable. We all matched way more than expected, and were able to shoot all these beautiful photos and have an amazing time together. What do you think? ¡Hola amigos míos! Se nos ha ido una semana más del verano y, con ella, las camisetas de manga corta, los shorts, los zapatos abiertos sin calcetines y los colores más claros han llegado para quedarse. Es increíble lo rápido que se va el año; ya estamos un poco más allá de la mitad del 2016 y parece que fuera sólo ayer cuando estábamos celebrando Año Nuevo y haciendo nuestros propósitos. Probablemente ya notaron que cambié mi cadencia en el blog a un post cada dos semanas ahora. Esto es sólo temporal y se debe principalmente al hecho de que he estado extremadamente ocupado últimamente y no he podido irme de aventuras bloggeras tan frecuentemente como lo hago durante el resto del año. Espero que no me hayan extrañado demasiado y próximamente estaré regresando a la cadencia semanal, así que esperen un par de semanas más para que todo vuelva a la normalidad.

Una de las razones por la cual he estado muy ocupado en este último mes es gracias a la temporada de interns en Microsoft. Me encanta cuando llegan los interns; es una de mis épocas favoritas del año ya que además coincide con ese tiempo en que el clima se pone delicioso y, además, gracias al programa Intern Social Club me permite pasar mucho tiempo con ellos al organizarles eventos y al ser invitado a sus fiestas. Habiendo sido un intern dos veces, sé que esta experiencia puede ser un poco dura y aterradora a veces, ya que para muchos es la primera vez que se encuentran fuera de casa. Es por ello que me encanta ayudar para hacer de este su mejor verano y es por lo que me gusta mucho involucrarme en el programa de ISC, para hacerlos sentir que tienen un grupo de amigos y una familia aquí en Microsoft.

Hace un par de fines de semana, un grupo de interns (muy bien parecidos), mi mejor amiga blogger Kim de HelloKimWin y yo nos embarcamos una mañana de sábado en un paseo por la hermosa reserva Bloedel en Bainbridge Island. Amigos de Seattle, si alguna vez quieren intentar una increíble aventura de un día en el Pacífico Noroeste no pueden perderse de esta brillante joya natural que se encuentra a tan sólo 30 millas del centro de Seattle. Tuvimos la oportunidad de viajar en ferry también, ya que uno necesita cruzar Elliot Bay para llegar ahí y pagamos tan sólo $8 USD por el viaje de ida y regreso, ¡valió totalmente la pena! La reserva Bloedel solía ser una casa y jardín privado del Sr. y la Sra. Bloedel, dos naturalistas que decidieron preservar esta área. Bajo la influencia del movimiento de conservación y de la cultura asiática, buscaron capturar la tranquilidad y naturaleza de los jardines japoneses (la reserva en sí tiene un jardín Zen dentro) y lograron mantener el lugar casi intacto por más de 50 años. En 1970 la reserva fue donada a la Universidad de Washington y está abierta hoy en día a visitantes de todo el país y del mundo.

Para nuestro paseo de fin de semana a la reserva Bloedel, decidimos vestir ropa de calor y veraniega para celebrar la llegada del verano. Algunas de las tendencias que se pueden observar en estas fotos es el uso de colores claros, como el blanco, rosa claro y azul cielo, junto con chamarras ligeras y camisas de mezclilla. Un dato interesante es que para este viaje, ¡casi no tuvimos que coordinar nuestros atuendos! Teníamos bastante variedad de texturas y patrones (por ejemplo tanto Kim como Emily decidieron vestir patrones de rayas) y también estaban presentes los diseños florales, que se pueden observar en el romper de Elise y en los shorts florales de Kim. Teal nos engalanó con un vestido único en tono rosado que, no lo van a creer, ¡fue diseñado y construido por su propia hermana! Y Henry y yo decidimos vestir pantalones chinos blancos, los cuales están súper de moda para la temporada de barcos y se ven frescos y son muy cómodos. Todos combinamos más de lo esperado y pudimos tomar estas hermosas fotografías y disfrutar de un día excelente juntos. ¿Qué opinan al respecto? ¿Encuentran algo que les atrae en estas fotos?
