Hello my friends, I approach you today with a heavy heart and not in the best mood to talk about fashion. As we already know, this past weekend a horrible act of terror targeting the LGBT community took place in Florida, where one single person with an assault rifle ended the life of almost 50 people and injured dozens more in a gay nightclub in Orlando. While I’m totally in favor of regulating these and many more types of weapons, since removing the means does make it more difficult for a mass murderer to kill so many people in such a short timespan, I wonder more deeply about the situation. Why do we need guns in the first place? Why do people feel they need to protect themselves against others and sometimes take justice in their own hands? The only answer I can come to think about is fear. It is from fear that intolerance against different beliefs and different lifestyles from our own usually emerges. It is also from fear that we start distrusting our neighbors, the people that live on the street, the police officers, our politicians, and the judicial system. And it also comes from fear to change that we sometimes don’t do anything about it; we continue with our lives and keep moving on.
However, we can’t live in fear forever. It’s unfathomable that someone these days can’t go to school, enjoy a movie, pray at their church, or have fun at a nightclub without having the fear of coming back home safely. It also doesn’t make sense to me why after 9/11 a stricter, more scrutinized control was placed on air travel to avoid anything of that magnitude from happening again, but after all these mass shootings we haven’t done anything. I applaud the politicians that are taking a stand in gun control, but that is not enough to stop the fear and hate in our society; we can and we must all be a part of this change. We should not cast away members that we know are going through troubling times or have a history of mental disease or hateful, discriminatory beliefs, since we’re just leaving a time bomb that could explode anytime. We must become good listeners, be inclusive with these people in our social groups, and provide our help when someone is asking for it so loudly. Only in that way we can end with not only gun violence, but violence in general, and become a more tolerant, fearless society. I dream of that world but we all need to be part of it.
I hope that moved some gears in you, and with that I will continue with my fashion post as usual because life has to move on, but we always need to change to be better. As we approach summer, days are getting longer and warmer, and with that come a lot of fashion fads that have been resurging after having been total hits in previous years and previous seasons. One of the things I’ve seen in magazines and other blogs that is really coming back this summer are softer, more pastel like colors. Light blue, mint green, light purple, pink, these colors are everywhere, from the British runways to the LA fashion shows. Topman has always been one of my favorite shops to buy summer wardrobe, and this time it was no exception. You can find a great array of warm, pastel tones in Topman right now, and of course I needed to try some of these for my blog.
For this post, you can see me wearing a short-sleeve shirt that goes from a light purple tone to pink in a beautiful, water-colored pattern. I decided to complement this shirt with a mint green pair of shorts also from Topman, which are going to be one of my go-to’s this summer because of the freshness and also because of how comfortable they are. To add a little contrast, I wore my bomber jacket which I got in Chicago since it’s a bit darker, but it adds to the whole overall summer look. Finally, I decided to wear my Lugano loafers since the leather gives a nice, sophisticated touch and I also styled them with my favorite pair of shades for this summer. What do you think? As you know I don’t like to get too political on my blog, but this atrocity was not a political attack; it was an attack on us as a community and it demands change from all of our society. If I could go back in time to prevent this from happening without a doubt I’d do it, but even though that’s not possible we can all work together so it doesn’t happen again. However, we need to all be united in this, not just the LGBT community, not just the politicians, and not just people from any particular belief system. The opposite of fear is love, and we all need a little bit more love towards one another and ourselves to avoid things like this in the future. Remember what I always tell you, let your voice be heard. I hope that our voices are heard this time and that no one feels like they are not being listened to anymore. Hola amigos, les escribo hoy con el corazón dolido y no en el mejor de los ánimos para hablar sobre moda. Como ya todos saben, este fin de semana un horrible acto de terror en contra de la comunidad LGBT tomó lugar en Florida, donde una sola persona con un rifle de asalto terminó con la vida de casi 50 personas y lesionó a docenas más en un antro gay de la ciudad de Orlando. Mientras que estoy totalmente a favor de regular estas y muchos tipos de armas más, dado que al quitar los medios sí es más díficil que una persona pueda matar a tantas otras en tan corto período de tiempo, pienso un poco más allá de esta situación. ¿Por qué necesitamos armas de fuego en un principio? ¿Por qué la gente siente que tiene que protegerse de otros y a veces hacer justicia por su propia mano? La única respuesta que se me ocurre es que la gente tiene miedo. Es del miedo que nace la intolerancia a creencias y estilos de vida que son diferentes que los nuestros. También es del miedo que nace la desconfianza hacia nuestros vecinos, hacia las personas que viven en la calle, a los policías, a nuestros políticos y al sistema jurídico. Y también es gracias al miedo al cambio que muchas veces no hacemos nada al respecto; simplemente seguimos adelante con nuestras vidas.
Sin embargo no podemos vivir con miedo por siempre. No entiendo porque en estos días alguien no puede ir a la escuela, disfrutar de una película, profesar su religión en su iglesia o divertirse en un antro nocturno sin tener miedo a volver a casa a salvo. Tampoco tiene sentido para mí que después de los ataques de 9/11 un control más estricto y escrutinio se estableció en los aeropuertos para evitar que algo de tal magnitud volviera a ocurrir, pero estos asesinatos por arma de fuego siguen ocurriendo y aún no hemos hecho algo al respecto. Aplaudo a los políticos que están tomando una postura a favor del control de armas, pero eso no es lo único que necesitamos para acabar con el miedo y el odio en nuestra sociedad; y es que todos podemos y debemos ser parte de este cambio. No debemos de alejar a miembros de la sociedad que sabemos que están pasando por un momento difícil, o que tienen un historial de inestabilidad mental, o pensamientos y creencias de odio y discriminación, ya que estamos dejando ahí una bomba de tiempo que puede explotar en cualquier momento. Tenemos que convertirnos en buenos escuchas, el ser inclusivos con estas personas en nuestros grupos sociales y proveer de ayuda a alguien que a veces nos lo está pidiendo a gritos. Sólo de esa manera podemos terminar no sólo con la violencia en manos de armas, sino con la violencia en general, y tenemos que convertirnos en una sociedad más tolerante y sin miedo. Sueño con un mundo así pero todos tenemos que contribuir para lograrlo.
Espero que eso haya movido algo dentro de ustedes, y con eso continuaré con mi post usual de moda ya que tenemos que seguir adelante, pero siempre adaptándonos para cambiar por algo mejor. Conforme se acerca el verano, los días se vuelven más largos y más cálidos, y con esto regresan muchas de las modas que se han vuelto tan populares en los últimos años y en temporadas pasadas. Una de estas tendencias que he estado observando en varias revistas y en otros blogs es el regreso de los colores más suaves y claros, estilo pastel. El azul celeste, el aqua o verde menta, el morado claro, y el rosa, son algunos de estos tonos que están por todos lados en las pasarelas del Reino Unido y en los shows de moda de LA. Topman siempre ha sido una de mis tiendas favoritas para comprar ropa de verano, y esta vez no fue la excepción. Pueden encontrar una amplia gama de ropa en estos colores pasteles en Topman en este momento, y por supuesto que tenía que probar algunas de ellas en mi blog.
Para este post, decidí ponerme una camisa de manga corta de botones que va de un tono color morado claro a rosa en un hermoso patrón que asemeja a una acuarela. Opté también por complementar esta camisa con unos shorts color verde menta también de Topman, los cuales se van a volver mi caballo de batalla este verano por su frescura y por lo cómodos que son. Para agregar un poco de constraste, me puse mi chamarra de bombardero que compré en Chicago hace un mes ya que es un tono más oscuro y le ayuda al look 100% veraniego. Finalmente, decidí usar mis zapatos estilo loafer de piel Lugano ya que le dan un toque único y sofisticado y lo completé todo con mis lentes de sol favoritos para este verano. ¿Qué opinan al respecto? ¿Son estos los tonos que ya son parte de sus guardarropas para este verano? Eso va a ser todo por hoy. Como ustedes saben, no me gusta ponerme muy político en mi blog, pero esta atrocidad no fue un ataque de tipo político; fue un ataque a todos nosotros como comunidad y requiere de cambio de parte de todos como sociedad. Si pudiera viajar en el tiempo y evitarlo lo haría sin lugar a dudas, pero aunque eso no es posible podemos evitar que vuelva a suceder. Sin embargo, es necesario que todos estemos unidos en esto, no sólamente la comunidad LGBT, ni sólo los políticos, ni sólo la gente perteneciente a un sistema de creencias en específico. Lo opuesto al miedo es el amor, y todos necesitamos amarnos más los unos a los otros y a nosotros mismos para que no pase esto en un futuro. Recuerden lo que siempre les digo, dejen que los demás escuchen su voz. Espero que nuestras voces sean escuchadas esta vez y que nadie más sienta que no está siendo escuchado nunca más.
