Black Friday Steals(Deals)

Hello my fellow Geek Q’ers! Today I’m writing you from my hometown in Mexico, and I can’t lie to you, I really missed the sun even though I was here just a few weeks ago. I will be in Monterrey till Sunday, when I’ll be traveling with my family to New York and I can’t wait to show you the outfits I have prepared for that trip! However, on this day I wanted to tell you about my latest meet-up with my blog BFF Kim. This time we had a really deep, heart-to-heart conversation (even though we’re all goofy most of the time we can also have some good, serious chit chat) and I’m super glad that we were able to connect right before going on my holiday vacation. Thanks for the pics and the talk Kimmy, you’re a great listener and friend and I can’t wait to see what next year has waiting for us two.

Now the other reason why I’m super excited for this post is that I bought a new lens! For photographers out there who might be interested, this is the lens that I got. I can’t lie, it did cost a pretty penny. I was doubting whether to buy a new camera or not, but after thinking for a while I thought that hey, my camera body is still good enough, but I still wanted some variety in the pics that I take. So I bought the lens, which I was playing with and I used to take the first picture. I love how thanks to the aperture (f/1.4G guys, super neat!) it can do that effect where the subject looks super sharp and the background has that blurry, dreamy look (for more info, look at the ‘bokeh’ effect and see what I’m talking about). I can’t wait to get some outdoor shots in New York with the Brooklyn Bridge or the Manhattan skyline in the background.

Now back to the post, and to fashion. This time I met with Kim at a cafeteria at our work place which is pretty neat since it has a lot of local produce. From jars of dill, pickled fruit, flour cans, bottles, and scales, this cafeteria pretty much resembles a market, like that of Pike Place or the Broadway Sunday Market. It’s really neat and I really liked how the pictures turned out. Now everything I’m wearing here (except the shoes) I got on Black Friday sales, and most had really good discounts (J Crew had 30% off in every item with the J Crew brand on it, and Club Monaco had an extra 50% on already discounted items). From Club Monaco, I got this awesome mac with a detachable hood. I can’t state how important it is to get rainproof outwear in the PNW, and this mac is both stylish and water-resistant, so it’s a great do for rainy days. I also got these convertible mittens, which I love since I can remove the cover and use my cell phone while still keeping my warmth. At J Crew, I got the cardigan and the Italian cashmere sweater. They were all J Crew branded, so I got a nice 30% off. Then I got these awesome denim joggers, which are my new go-to jeans in this winter season. They are comfy, look great under the camera, and have this nice, shiny polished look. To complete the outfit, I’m strutting in Sperry Top-Siders, since I love nautical shoes; I would usually wear them without socks, but here I’m wearing some heavy crew socks because it was a cold day. What do you think? Weren’t all these acquisitions really a bargain? I felt that I stole from all these shops :).

¡Hola mis queridos Geek Q’ers! El día de hoy les escribo desde mi natal Monterrey, y no puedo mentir, ya empezaba a extrañar el sol aun cuando hace unas semanas me encontraba aquí. Estaré en mi ciudad hasta el domingo, día en el que viajo con toda mi familia a Nueva York y no puedo esperar para mostrar lo que les tengo preparado. Sin embargo, el día de hoy quiero contarles sobre mi última reunión con mi blog BFF Kim. En esta ocasión, tuvimos una plática profunda y abierta de corazón a corazón (aunque siempre estemos bromeando y estemos súper contentos, también tenemos nuestros momentos serios de vez en cuando) y estoy muy feliz de haberme podido reunir con ella antes de mis vacaciones. Muchísimas gracias por las fotos Kimmy, y por la plática también ya que eres una excelente escucha y amiga y no me imagino las cosas grandiosas que el nuevo año tiene preparadas para nosotros.

Ahora la otra razón por la que estoy muy emocionado por este post, ¡es que me he comprado una nueva lente! Para los aficionados a la fotografía que estén interesados, esta es la lente que compré. No puedo mentir, es una lente algo costosa. Estaba dudando entre comprar una nueva cámara o no, pero después de pensar por un rato me dije a mi mismo hey, el body de mi cámara todavía está en buenas condiciones. Yo lo que estaba buscando era variedad en las fotos que tomo. Entonces me decidí por comprar la lente, con la cual me encuentro jugando en la primera fotografía. Me fascina como gracias a la apertura (f/1.4G chicos, ¿bastante bien no creen?) puedo lograr ese efecto donde el sujeto de la foto se ve extremadamente nítido, y el fondo tiene ese efecto borroso, como de sueño (para más información, pueden checar este link sobre el efecto ‘bokeh’). ¡No puedo esperar para tomar fotos en Nueva York con el puente de Brooklyn o el skyline de Manhattan en el fondo con esta lente!

Ahora de vuelta al post, y a la moda. En esta ocasión me encontré con Kim en una de las cafeterías del trabajo, la cual está increíble porque tiene muchos productos locales en muestra. Desde frascos con pepinillo, frutas en almíbar, latas de harina, botellas y balanzas, esta cafetería le da un aire a mercados como el Pike Market y el mercado dominical de Broadway. Está muy bonita y me encantó como salieron las fotos. Todo lo visto aquí (a excepción de los zapatos) lo obtuve en Black Friday y la mayoría de los artículos estaban en descuento (todo en J Crew tenía un 30% de descuento mientras fuera de la marca de la tienda y Club Monaco ofrecía un 50% sobre lo ya rebajado). De Club Monaco obtuve esta gabardina con gorra desprendible. No puedo explicar lo importante que es utilizar ropa water-proof en el Noroeste de Estados Unidos y esta gabardina cumple con eso además de tener un estilo muy agradable. ¡Una excelente pieza para esos días lluviosos! También me compré estos guantes convertibles, los cuales ya amo porque puedo remover la cubierta y utilizar el celular sin que se me enfríen las manos. En J Crew compré el cardigan y el suéter de casimir italiano. Los dos eran de la marca, entonces me otorgaron un 30% de descuento en ambas piezas. Luego conseguí estos joggers de mezclilla que ya se convirtieron en mi pantalón de preferencia este invierno. Son cómodos, se ven bastante bien frente a la cámara y tienen un look bastante estilizado brillante. Para completar el outfit, camino en unos Sperry Top-Siders ya que me fascinan los zapatos de marinero; normalmente los usaría sin calcetines pero aquí traigo unas calceta gruesas pues hacía mucho frío ese día. ¿Qué opinan? ¿A poco no fueron todas estas compras una ganga? Casi sentía que le robaba a estas tiendas :).
