People in Seattle say that if the 4th of July is our unofficial start of summer, then Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, and that pretty much used to be the case for the last years I’ve lived here. However, this year has been different, and I’m going to stretch out the summer weather and the summer outfits for as long as I can. It seems like it was just a few weeks ago when my friend and fellow Seattle Gent Antonio Smith and I were in downtown Tacoma with a couple other Gents checking out the scene, scouting for some good places to do a photoshoot. We usually do our photoshoots in Seattle, so when we had the chance to visit Tacoma for the Couture and Cars event, we knew we were in for an adventure. We stumbled upon train stations, museums, the courthouse, and a beautiful waterfront beach, which really lived up to Tacoma’s motto “when rails meet sails”.
You see, the city of Tacoma is almost as old as the city of Seattle itself. Named after the original name of Mount Rainier, Takhoma (or Tahoma) the city has been an important part of the West Coast economy since the 19th Century. It is also known as the City of Destiny, since the area was chosen as the western end of the Northern Pacific Railroad, and a flourishing port was established in the harbor of Commencement Bay in south Puget Sound. Post WWII, Tacoma experienced a long decline in popularity, and soon streets and storefronts were abandoned. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the revival of downtown Tacoma began. Some of the projects that emerged from that effort are the creation of the federal courthouse in the former Union Station, the opening of the Washington State History Museum, the Museum of Glass, and the Tacoma Art Museum. Soon, Tacoma’s historic downtown was becoming again a welcoming place for culture and people started moving back to Seattle’s southern neighbor.
For my stroll in downtown Tacoma, I decided to wear a combination of a chambray shirt from J. Crew along with some khaki chinos, also from J. Crew. For the accessories, I opted for my Roxxlyn watch, and a pair of Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses. Finally, I decided to wear the Wolf Clothing Co. colorful socks, and for the shoes I went for a casual, dressy vibe with some brown Oxfords from Aldo. Then for the waterfront look, I opted for a suit and tie look comprised of a light platinum gray suit from Topman, with a blue vest from J. Crew. My bow tie is from Penguin, and once again the brown Oxfords complete the outfit. What do you guys think? Are you thinking of taking a trip down to Tacoma? It’s been a while since I’ve been there, so I’m really excited of visiting the huge megalopolis once again. I really hope I at least get some time to visit a few of the touristic spots, but I’m just ecstatic about having some Mexican food while down there. Then I’ll be back by the end of next week, and hopefully will have some time to chill and relax before another super busy week with Bellevue Fashion Week. La gente en Seattle suele decir que si el 4 de julio es el inicio no-oficial del verano, entonces Labor Day es el final no-oficial del verano y, la verdad, es que ese ha sido el caso en los más recientes años que he vivido aquí. Sin embargo, este año ha sido distinto y me he propuesto extender lo más que pueda mis outfits de verano mientras siga el clima veraniego. Parece que fue hace tan sólo unas semanas cuando mi amigo y compañero de los Seattle Gents Antonio Smith y yo nos encontrábamos en el centro de Tacoma junto con otros Gents para ver el lugar y encontrar dónde hacer un photoshoot. Usualmente hacemos nuestras sesiones fotográficas en Seattle, así que cuando tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar Tacoma por el evento de Couture and Cars, sabíamos que estábamos por tener una aventura. Nos topamos con estaciones de trenes, museos, una corte federal y una hermosa playa junto al mar, lo cual realmente reflejaba el famoso slogan de Tacoma “donde los rieles se encuentran con las velas”.
Verán, la ciudad de Tacoma es casi tan vieja como la ciudad de Seattle. Su nombre proviene del nombre original de Mount Rainier, Takhoma (o Tahoma) y esta ciudad ha sido una parte importante de la economía de la costa Oeste desde el siglo XIX. También es conocida como la Ciudad del Destino, ya que esta área fue escogida como el punto final del Ferrocarril del Pacífico Norte, y un pequeño puerto floreció y se estableció en el muelle de Commencement Bay en el sur del Puget Sound. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Tacoma experimento un declive en su popularidad, y pronto sus calles y establecimientos empezaron a ser abandonados. No fue hasta los años 90s que el renacimiento del centro de Tacoma comenzó. Algunos de los proyectos que emergieron de ese esfuerzo fue la creación de la corte federal en la antigua Union Station, la inauguración del Museo de Historia del Estado de Washington, el Museo del Vidrio y el Museo de Arte de Tacoma. Rápidamente, el centro histórico de Tacoma se convirtió una vez más en un lugar propicio para la cultura y la gente empezó a mudarse una vez más a esta vecina ciudad al sur de Seattle.
Para mi paseo por el centro de Tacoma, decidí utilizar una combinación compuesta por una camisa de mezclilla de J. Crew junto con unos pantalones chinos en color khaki, también de J. Crew. Para los accesorios, opté por mi reloj Roxxlyn y un par de lentes de sol de aviador de Ray-Ban. Finalmente, decidí ponerme mis calcetas de Wolf Clothing Co. las cuáles son muy coloridas y para los zapatos quería un look más casual que logré con estos Oxfords en color café de Aldo. Luego, para el look en el barco, me puse mi traje en color gris platino de Topman junto con un chaleco en tono azul de la marca J. Crew. Mi moño es de Penguin y una vez más, los Oxfords en color café completaron el outfit. ¿Qué les parece amigos? ¿Están listos para echarse una vuelta por la ciudad de Tacoma? Si sí lo hacen, les recomiendo visitar el restaurante Stanley & Seafort’s para el brunch; es una excelente opción. Esto va a ser todo por hoy amigos. La próxima semana, se ve que va a estar bastante ajetreada para mí, ya que estaré viajando a la Ciudad de México para un viaje de reclutamiento. Ha pasado ya algún tiempo desde la última vez que estuve ahí, entonces estoy muy emocionado de poder visitar la gran megalópolis una vez más. Espero tener tiempo de darme una vuelta por algunos de los sitios turísticos, pero si no, el simple hecho de comer comida mexicana ahí me tiene bastante ilusionado. Luego regreso para el próximo fin de semana, y espero poder tener un buen descanso antes de comenzar otra semana súper ajetreada con Bellevue Fashion Week. Hay además un evento de moda otoñal que está por finalizarse, así que les diré todos los detalles aquí por el blog cuando se tenga fecha y lugar.
