Metropolitan Fashion Week 2016

People often ask me why is it that I started this blog and my answer is always the same: for the love of fashion. However, it’s moments like the one I lived just a couple weekends ago that makes me realize that fashion is not just an industry, it’s not just a business; it’s an art, and an expression that transports our minds and imagination to completely different places. This moment for me was Metropolitan Fashion Week and the event was the Seattle Farewell Show. I can’t begin to explain how magical and wondrous this event was, starting from the venue. No place can suit an artistic show better than an actual museum, which is exactly where the event took place, at the Seattle Art Museum. The towering sculptures and splendidly lit stairwells of this magnificent building were witnesses to one of the most beautiful and mind-blowing fashion shows I’ve ever been to, and the next time someone tells me that Seattle is not fashionable I’m going to show them this article and prove them wrong.

The opening act was a display of suits and casual menswear by Suit Supply. I was highly impressed by the amount of detail and the level of high fashion that was incorporated to these looks. From floral ties, to leather suitcases, to plain color suits, and patterned prints, the wide array of textures and color left a great impression on me. Being a menswear blogger myself, I have a keen appreciation for taking risks with bold prints and patterned fabrics, and this opening really started the show with a bang. Next in the lineup was costume designer Perry Meek, who is really famous for having designed costumes for Lady Gaga and other artists. His vision on the runway really came through by the means of his work: male and female warriors in life, dressed with metallic bodices and feathery headpieces, started walking down the runway displaying an amazing use of unconventional fabrics and materials one wouldn’t normally see at a fashion show. His red body suit a la Queen of Hearts was a showstopper, and drew the attention from everyone in the room. I find it great when fantasy, style, and art meet in such a seamless, beautiful way, and Meek achieved that to perfection.

Following this act was designer Erick Bendaña, a Latin American designer that brings us back to his roots with his playful use of color and sheer fabrics to the rhythm of Conga. Erick’s gowns were lovely, showing just the right amount of skin but still looking classy and sophisticated. However, what blew me away were his incredible costumes made with dyed macaw and peacock feathers. This was a great tribute to Latin American culture, and wowed me not only for the extremely careful execution but for the thoughtful use of different tones and colors to create an emotion out of each look. This was definitely one of my favorite designers of the whole show. The next designer to show us her work was Niveen Heaton, whose swimwear line ADICORA brought a completely different approach to traditional swimwear. Her use of different shapes and styles makes her line suitable for any body type, and she gives her girl a youthful and joyful feeling in these colorful bikinis. The jewelry was designed by Beto Yarce and was a great touch to bring these designs to the next level.

The next two designers to present their work were Olena Dat’s Miau by Clara Rotescu and Ema Savajh, and Claire’s Collection. These two acts consisted mainly of evening gowns, some of which were to die for. My favorite two were a sheer white maxi with an asymmetrical shoulder and pink details on the skirt, along with a beautiful embroidered red halter with pleats. The light hit in just the right places with this last piece, and it brought a cheering ovation from the crowd. Our next act was a second presentation by Suit Supply for menswear, however, this time it was formal suits and tuxedos making an appearance on main stage. I must say that these suits were stunning and my favorite was an all-white ensamble with a black bow tie, bringing back that 50s classic look of Hollywood stars. Last but not least, was a hand painted Marilyn Monroe canvas gown by Anahit Etemadi and fashion designer Julie Danforth. This masterpiece is the perfect mix of fashion and art in a very original way, and the amount of detail and thought put into it is exceptional. This was probably my favorite piece of the whole runway show, and the model walked gracefully and brought everyone to our feet in this gown.

The most emotional moment of the night came right after these dresses, when to honor late pop superstar Prince, the models walked down the runway with purple umbrellas to the beats of Purple Rain. Such a beautiful tribute to an artist that was a trendsetter in terms of both his musical and fashion artistry. As for myself, I had the night of my life surrounded by such talented people and being able to witness this event for the last time in Seattle (so sad!) was definitely a privilege. La gente suele preguntarme por qué empecé a escribir este blog y mi respuesta es casi siempre la misma: por el amor a la moda. Sin embargo, son momentos como el que viví hace apenas un par de fin de semanas que realmente me hacen darme cuenta que la moda no es sólo una industria, o sólo un negocio: es un arte, una expresión que lleva a nuestros cuerpos y mentes a lugares completamente distintos. Ese momento para mí fue Metropolitan Fashion Week y el evento se llamó Seattle Farewell Show. No puedo explicarles lo mágico y maravilloso que fue este evento, comenzando por el lugar. Ningún sitio le queda mejor a un show artístico como un museo, que es justamente donde el evento dio lugar, en el Seattle Art Museum. Las enormes esculturas y las escaleras espléndidamente iluminadas de este magnífico edificio fueron testigos de uno de los shows de moda más hermosos y asombrosos que he visto y, la próxima vez que alguien me diga que Seattle no es una ciudad a la moda, les voy a enseñar este artículo para demostrarles lo contrario.

El acto inaugural consistió de un despliegue de trajes y ropa de hombre casual auspiciado por Suit Supply. Me quedé impresionado con la cantidad de detalle y el nivel de alta costura que se incorporó a estos looks. Desde corbatas florales, a portafolios de piel, de trajes lisos en un solo color, a diversos estampados, la gran gama de texturas y colores me dejó una muy buena impresión. Siendo yo un blogger de moda masculina, tengo un aprecio muy especial por looks que toman riesgos con estampados llamativos y telas con distintos patrones, así que para mí el show había comenzado con el pie derecho. El siguiente en el itinerario fue el diseñador de disfraces y vestuario Perry Meek, quien es reconocido por haber diseñado vestuarios para artistas como Lady Gaga, entre otros. Su visión en la pasarela realmente se plasmó en su trabajo: guerreros y guerreras de la vida, vestidos en armazones metálicas y adornos de plumas, comenzaron a bajar por las escaleras desplegando un uso impresionante de materiales y telas no convencionales que uno normalmente no ve en un show de moda. Su body suit rojo muy a la reina de corazones fue un agasajo para los presentes, llamando la atención de todos los espectadores. Personalmente me fascina cuando un diseñador combina la fantasía, el estilo y el arte de manera tan armoniosa y bella, y siento que Meek logró eso a la perfección.

Acto seguido se presentó Erick Bendaña, un diseñador latinoamericano que nos regresa a sus raíces con su uso lúdico de colores y telas transparentes al ritmo de Conga. Los vestidos de Erick son realmente hermosos, enseñando sólo la cantidad adecuada de piel pero aún mostrándose con clase y mucha sofisticación. Sin embargo, lo que me impresionó más fueron sus increíbles disfraces hechos con plumas pintadas de pericos y pavorreales. Esto fue un tributo excelente a la cultura latinoamericana, y me llegó mucho no sólo por la ejecución impecable sino también por el delicado uso de tonos y colores para crear una emoción detrás de cada look. Este fue sin duda alguna uno de mis diseñadores favoritos de todo el show. La siguiente diseñadora en presentarnos su trabajo fue Niveen Heaton, cuya línea de trajes de baño ADICORA engalanó la noche con su visión muy distinta de los trajes de baño tradicionales. Su uso de formas y estilos diferentes hacen que esta línea pueda ser usada por mujeres de cualquier complexión y sus piezas hacen que la persona que usa estas prendas se vea joven y alegre en estos coloridos bikinis. La joyería que portaban las chicas fue diseñada por Beto Yarce y daban el toque perfecto para elevar los diseños a otro nivel.

Los siguientes dos diseñadores en compartir sus diseños fueron Clara Rotescu y Ema Savajh con su colección Olena Dat’s Miau, y la colección de Claire. Estos dos actos consistieron principalmente en vestidos de noche, algunos de los cuales estaban como para caer desmayado. Mis favoritos fueron un vestido largo blanco con transparencias, hombros asimétricos y detalles en rosa en la falda y un hermoso vestido halter en rojo con piedrería y dobleces en la falda. La luz se reflejaba en los mejores lugares con esta última pieza y todos en el público la ovacionaron cuando fue presentada. El próximo acto fue una segunda presentación de Suit Supply en ropa masculina, pero esta vez, ropa formal y smokings sería lo que veríamos en el escenario. Debo admitir que estos trajes se veían fabulosos y mi favorito era un traje todo en color blanco con un moño negro, trayendo de vuelta ese look de estrella de Hollywood de los años 50s. Por último, bajó por la pasarela un vestido-pintura hecho a mano por Anahit Etemadi con el rostro de Marilyn Monroe y las creaciones de la diseñadora Julie Danforth. Esta obra de arte es la mezcla perfecta de moda y arte en una forma muy original y el nivel de detalle y pensamiento detrás de este es excepcional. Este fue sin duda mi look favorito de todo el show y la modelo caminó con gracia y nos puso a todos de pie.

El momento más emotivo de la noche siguió a esta última presentación, cuando en honor a la fallecida estrella del pop Prince, los modelos caminaron una vez más por la pasarela portando un paraguas en color morado al son de la canción Purple Rain. Fue un hermoso tributo para un artista que fue un parteaguas no sólo por su sentido musical sino también por sus incursiones en el mundo de la moda. En cuanto a mí, tuve la noche de mi vida rodeado de tantas personas tan talentosas y pudiendo ser testigo de este evento por última vez en la ciudad de Seattle (muy triste), lo cual fue un mero privilegio. Eso es todo por hoy mis amigos.
