Seattle Fashion Week Designer Expose 2016

If there’s one week of the year that you don’t want to miss out on, that’s fashion week. It’s that 7-day period of the season where people from the fashion industry get together to share their passion for clothing and good styling. Since it is the first time that this is happening in the city of Seattle, I feel very proud right now of being a Seattle fashion blogger and having participated in such an amazing event was really an honor. After seeing all the potential this city has, I’m certain that it will sooner rather than later become one of the world’s hippest, trendiest fashion capitals, such like NYC and LA have been for years. It is our time to shine, and the world must better be ready for the incredible amount of talent that is about to explode from the Pacific Northwest.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the first Seattle Fashion Week Designer Expose, which is an event that serves as a platform for foreign and local fashion designers to show their collections to retailers, other designers, models, photographers, stylists, and of course, fashion bloggers. It is a major event for these artists, since this time, they presented their Spring and Summer 2016 collections, and for many of them this was the first time they had done it. I was greatly impressed by the talent and determination of many of these creatives, and the craft and thought that went into each one of the pieces presented at the show was mind-blowing. Today I want to share with you the four brands that stood up to me the most, their motivation, and some photos of their work. I want to apologize in advance for the quality of the photos but these were taken with my cell phone since I didn’t have my camera, but I hope you enjoy this small taste of Seattle fashion.

Plume Amour

Not everyday does an accessory booth at a fashion exposition steal the show, but when your model looks like a painting and the material you worked with is natural, renewable, and hand-processed, you definitely take a look. And that’s what happened to me with Plume Amour, Raeleen Knutson’s sophisticated brand of glamourous capelets made out of real bird feathers. She has paired up with Zazu House, a parrot sanctuary where birds that have spent most of their lives in a cage can live freely and fly for the first time. This house provides the fallen feathers of macaws and parrots to make her creations and the proceeds go back to them. She started doing this to spark up conversation, being a shy person she thought it was a good way of breaking the ice. And so did she! Raeleen is really speaking to us with these beautiful garments, and the best thing is that from pieces made with other feathers part of her proceeds go back to Zazu as a way of giving back to protect these wonderful animals. What a nice way of creating art, fashion, and preserving our environment all at the same time!

This local Seattle brand was created by Natalia Luke, an apparel designer and engineer that wants to challenge garment construction with her design. Natalia was inspired by modern art, Japanese fashion, and street style, and she included both menswear and womenswear in her collection. She believes that fashion must have an intention, in contrast to the more traditional utilitarian nature of clothing. One of the things that stood up to me the most about Natalia and her work was the beautiful construction of her pieces. These are all hand-crafted by her, and the level of precision in the execution is flawless; I could barely believe these were all hand-made. There’s also a really cool, fresh vibe that her style transmits which makes her clothes very appealing, and her point of view is pretty consistent. You’ll look super badass in these garments, and you’ll definitely grab the immediate attention of people when wearing one of these, stating the point that indeed Narcissism is not a sin.

Dawnamatrix is the perfect combination of fine art and fashion. This line of luxury latex couture, created by Dawn Mostow, really caught my eye the minute I saw one of her designs walking by at the event, since they’re bold, extravagant, and extremely flattering. Having lived in Japan for a few years, Dawn has been inspired by both the current and ancient culture of this beautiful Asian country, ranging from kimonos with Hello Kitty imprinted on it, to futuristic bodices with leopard prints, to full-on costume and Anime design. As it name suggests, there’s something really powerful about these looks, and the latex material just makes it look expensive and refined. These pieces have grabbed the attention of celebrities like Kylie Jenner, who has worn one of her gowns in her famous wheelchair photoshoot for Interview magazine. With her work, Dawn is bringing the future of fashion to the present and we’re loving this.

Talent has no age, and Tristen Mickelson, creator and chief designer of the Seattle brand TRISYR, is a definite proof of this statement. I had the pleasure of meeting Tristen at one of Seattle’s Fashion Industry networking events, and after becoming really good friends, there hasn’t been a day I haven’t been impressed by the incredible amount of talent and determination this 16-year old designer has. After the passing of his grandfather about three years ago, Tristen decided that he was going to waste no more time in fulfilling his dream of becoming a fashion designer, and what a long way has this kid gone. Luxurious yet grungy is his motto, and the thing that stands to me the most about his design is his meticulous attention to detail, pattern match-making, and strong voice. I went to his first runway show this past weekend and it was really easy to recognize his work when the models were posing for a photoshoot outside, because he knows his customer and the audience he’s targeting. That makes him a true force to reckon with and I’m sure we’ll hear more from this young Seattle rock star in the future.

For those of you wondering what I decided to wear to this event, I went for a full glam look provided by EXPRESS consisting of a burgundy sateen jacket with some black suit pants. I wore a bicolor button-down underneath, with a light gray shade on the collar, and a dark gray sateen tie. I complemented this look with a pair of black shoes and I went for a leather Michael Kors watch and my Salvatore Ferragamo belt for the accessories. What do you guys think? There was an official photoshoot at the entrance where I got these pics taken and oh my God, they look like studio photos! I’m loving them!

With this I close out my first experience at Seattle Fashion Week which I must say, I greatly enjoyed and I feel extremely grateful for having been a part of. I’m super excited about the future of Seattle in the fashion industry because I feel that it’s with events like this that more people are going to be encouraged to express their points of view to the world in terms of fashion design. I also firmly believe that there is an enormous amount of talent in the Northwest waiting to be discovered, and that designers need these types of platforms to showcase their creations to more people. I feel very proud of living in this amazing city and to be part of this event is something I will definitely not forget, ever. Si existe una semana del año que no te quieres perder, esta es la semana de la moda. Es ese período de 7 días en la temporada en el que la gente de la industria de la moda se junta para compartir su pasión por la ropa y el buen estilo. Dado que esta fue la primera vez que sucede en la ciudad de Seattle, me siento muy orgulloso en este momento de ser un blogger de esta ciudad y el haber participado en dicho evento fue realmente un honor. Tras ver el potencial que tiene Seattle, estoy seguro que más pronto que tarde esta se convertirá en una de las capitales de la moda del mundo, así como Nueva York y Los Ángeles han sido por años. Es nuestro tiempo de brillar y más vale que el mundo esté listo porque el talento que va a explotar del Pacífico Noroeste en los próximos años es increíble.

La semana pasada, tuve el privilegio de presenciar el Seattle Fashion Week Designer Expose, el cual es un evento que sirve como plataforma para que diseñadores de moda locales y foráneos presenten sus colecciones a boutiques, otros diseñadores, modelos, fotógrafos, estilistas, y por supuesto, bloggers de moda. Es un evento muy importante para estos artistas, ya que en esta ocasión, mostraron sus colecciones de Primavera-Verano 2016, y para muchos de estos era la primera vez que lo hacían. Estoy realmente impresionado con el talento y la determinación de muchos de estos creativos, y el trabajo y pensamiento que llevó a realizar cada una de las piezas presentadas me sorprendió enormemente. Hoy quisiera compartirles cuatro de las marcas que más me impactaron, su motivación, y algunas fotos de su obra. Les pido una disculpa de antemano por la calidad de las fotos pero estas fueron tomadas con mi celular dado que no tenía mi cámara; aún así espero disfruten esta pequeña muestra de la moda de Seattle.

Siento que pocas veces un local de accesorios se roba el show, pero cuando tu modelo parece literal una obra de arte y el material que utilizaste es natural, renovable y procesado a mano, definitivamente tienes que voltear a echar un vistazo. Y eso precisamente fue lo que me sucedió con Plume Amour, la sofisticada marca de capas glamurosas hechas con plumas reales que creó Raeleen Knutson. Ella se ha aliado a Zazu House, un santuario de pericos donde aves que han vivido la mayor parte de sus vidas en una jaula pueden vivir en libertad y volar por vez primera. Ella empezó a hacer estas capas para entablar conversaciones, siendo una persona tímida creía que era una buena idea para romper el hielo. ¡Y claro que lo logró! Raeleen realmente está platicando con nosotros con estas prendas tan hermosas, y lo mejor es que sus ganancias están destinadas a Zazu para proteger a estos magfíficos animales. ¡Qué excelente manera de crear arte, moda y preservar nuestro ambiente, todo al mismo tiempo! ¿No creen?

Esta marca local de Seattle fue creada por Natalia Luke, una diseñadora de aparadores e ingeniera que quiere desafiar la construcción de prendas con sus diseños. Natalia fue inspirada por el arte moderno, la moda japonesa y el estilo urbano, y tiene tanto ropa para hombre como mujer en su colección. Ella cree fervientemente que la moda debe tener una intención, en contraste al sentido más tradicional utilitario de la ropa. Una de las cosas que más me llamó la atención de Natalia y de su trabajo es la impecable construcción de sus prendas. Estas fueron fabricadas a mano, todas por ella, y el nivel de precisión y ejecución es perfecto; no podía creer que todas estas piezas fueran hechas a mano. También su ropa tiene una vibra muy cool y relajada que transmite de una manera muy llamativa, y su punto de vista es bastante consistente. Te verás muy badass usando alguna de estas prendas y definitivamente vas a atraer la atención de la gente al vestirlas, enviando el mensaje de que es cierto, ser narcisista no es un pecado.

Dawnamatrix es la combinación ideal de arte y moda. Esta línea de costura lujosa hecha en látex, creada por Dawn Mostow, realmente llamó mi atención en el momento que vi pasar a alguien con uno de sus diseños en el evento, ya que son fuertes, extravagantes y se ven sorprendentemente bien. Tras haber vivido en Japón por unos años, Dawn se inspiró tanto por la cultura antigua como moderna de este bello país asiático, ofreciendo looks desde kimonos con Hello Kitty pintada en ellos, a torsos futurísticos con camuflaje de leopardo, a literalmente disfraces completos y diseño de Anime. Como su nombre sugiere, hay cierto sentimiento de poder en estas prendas y el material látex sólo lo hace ver más lujoso y refinado. Estas piezas han llamado la atención de celebridades como Kylie Jenner, quien vistió uno de sus vestidos en su famoso photoshoot en silla de ruedas para la revista Interview. Con su trabajo, Dawn nos está trayendo el futuro de la moda al presente y esto lo apreciamos.

El talento no tiene edad, y Tristen Mickelson, creador y diseñador en jefe de la marca local TRISYR, es viva prueba de ello. Tuve el placer de conocer a Tristen en uno de los eventos de networking de la industria de la moda en Seattle, y tras convertirnos en buenos amigos, no hay día en que no me impresione la cantidad de talento y determinación que este diseñador de tan sólo 16 años tiene. Después del fallecimiento de su abuelo hace apróximadamente tres años, Tristen decidió que ya no iba a desperdiciar su tiempo para cumplir su sueño de convertirse en diseñador de moda, y vaya que ha llegado muy lejos. Lujoso pero grungy es su lema, y lo que más me llama la atención de sus diseños es su meticulosa atención al detalle, como mezcla diferentes patrones y lo fuerte que es su voz. Acabo de presenciar su primera pasarela de moda este fin de semana y me fue muy fácil reconocer su trabajo cuando los modelos estaban afuera tomándose fotografías, porque conoce a su cliente y a su audiencia. Esto lo hace una verdadera fuerza a seguir y estoy seguro de que escucharemos mucho más de este joven diseñador de Seattle en un futuro.

    
Para aquellos que se estén preguntando qué decidí ponerme para el evento, opté por un look de alfombra roja proveído directamente por EXPRESS que consiste en un saco color vino con un pantalón de traje en color negro. También me puse una camisa bicolor debajo, con un ligero tono gris en el cuello de la camisa, y una corbata color gris más oscuro. Complementé este look con un par de zapatos negros y me puse mi reloj de piel Michael Kors y mi cinto Salvatore Ferragamo para los accesorios. ¿Qué opinan al respecto? Había un photoshoot oficial en la entrada del evento donde me tomaron estas fotos y me han encantado, ¡parecen fotos de estudio!

Con esto doy por terminada mi primer experiencia en la semana de la moda en Seattle, la cual debo decir que disfruté en grande y me siento muy agradecido por haber sido parte de ella. Estoy muy emocionado por el futuro de Seattle en la industria de la moda porque siento que con eventos como este la gente va a sentirse más entusiasmada por expresar sus puntos de vista al mundo en términos de diseño de moda. También creo fielmente que hay muchísimo talento aquí en el Noroeste esperando ser descubierto, y que los diseñadores necesitan de estas plataformas para mostrar sus creaciones a más y más personas. Me siento orgulloso de vivir en esta increíble ciudad y el haber sido partícipe de este evento es algo que nunca olvidaré.
