New York Fashion Week FW18: Day 3 + 4

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about the rest of my New York Fashion Week experience this past month. So you might remember that the last post ended up with me going to the Couture Fashion Week show. Well, my next day started with another photoshoot, this time at the Spring Studios in Tribeca where NYFW: The Shows was taking place. Also with me this time was my friend Arturo, and we shot some of the following photos in the entrance to the studios. From there we took the subway, and traveled to one of my favorite neighborhoods in NYC: SoHo. SoHo is the neighborhood that’s located south of Houston St. (that’s where the name SoHo originates from, South of Houston) and is primarily a shopping district. Some of my favorite boutiques such as Topman, Club Monaco, and J. Crew, among others, have a shop in this area. SoHo is also home to lots of chic restaurants, art galleries, bars, and is one of the liveliest, busiest areas of town during the day.

For my photoshoot in SoHo with Arturo, I decided to wear a vintage, Andy-Warholesque outfit inspired by the city of NYC. For the jacket, I was wearing my down parka from Andrew Marc, which I got precisely with the intention of protecting myself from the extreme cold during this trip. This parka is a marvel, and it will let you wear as little as one layer of clothing and still feel super warm when wearing it. The hood has faux fur, so it is both good to the environment and it looks trendy and cool. For the top, I decided to wear a turtleneck sweater in teal from Topman and for the pants I also went for Topman with these fun, checkered printed slacks. The shoes I was wearing were the same chukka boots from Sperry Topsider that I used in most of my trip to Europe and the glasses are, of course, Ollie Quinn (which by the way, my OQDIAZ code for 10% got renewed one more month, so you guys can still use it! Make sure you get a pair of glasses or sunnies soon!)

After shooting in SoHo for a while, Arturo and I noticed that there was a big crowd outside of a building right on Broadway, and we noticed that the building had a sign that read BET Museum of MEME. Given that we’re both social media adepts, we decided to check it out and see what was being in display. It was a really cool place, where they were honoring some of the most viral, recognizable memes of the past 10 years, and they showcased the history of social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and Twitter, which have all changed the way we interact and communicate in the era of the Internet. We took a couple of photos there and got some memorabilia with some stickers with some of our favorite memes (one of my favorite is the Neil DeGrasse-Tyson one where he shows his palms in disbelief, and I got it in sticker version for my laptop).

After strolling through SoHo we went for lunch to one of my favorite chef’s restaurants in NYC called Cosme. Cosme is a Mexican style restaurant in the Flat Iron District neighborhood, and he’s the same chef that owns Pujol in Mexico City, so I was really excited to taste the food and see the place. We got our reservation that same day, and I was pretty surprised to see how popular it was. Well, later on I found out why, because the food is delicious and the setting is exquisite. We got the quesadillas de epazote with some Japanese-inspired chia tostadas, and for the main course the famous chef’s barbacoa. Guys, I know that there are really good Mexican restaurants in the east coast, but this is hands down one of the best I’ve been to. If you ever find yourself in the area I would totally recommend that you go. You definitely won’t regret it! After lunch (we were super full after such a big meal) my friend Arturo and I did some more shoots near the Flat Iron building and in the subway. Some of these photos are one of my favorites from the whole trip, they just literally scream NYC. I want to thank Arturo for joining me in these trip and for snapping these photos. My day ended with another party, this one being the Couture Fashion Week Afterparty at the Crowne Plaza, which is the same spot where the Couture Fashion Week show took place, and I had a relaxing fun night where I met lots of designers, models, and attendees from the show.

For the last day, I had one more big event waiting for me, the Small Boutique Fashion Week show. This show is very special because in contrast with NYFW: The Shows, or Couture Fashion Week, the designers here are independent designers, so they don’t have the big budgets or the great support from big brands, but they still have really cool ideas and are very creative with their designs. I always like supporting these types of designers (which is one of the reasons I love working with local brands) so I was super excited to see what they came up with. The venue was Studio 450 in the neighborhood of Chelsea, near the meat packing district. I must say, I was a little weary about the venue because the building looked kind of old and this area in general is a bit more industrial, but it ended up serving the purpose really well because it’s like a giant warehouse, and it was all painted white from the inside. This made for the show to look really sophisticated and clean, and the photography inside was also very easy (once again, this building featured amazing natural lighting). Down below you can see some of the photos of my 3 favorite designs. There were 5 designers in total, but one had to cancel so I was only able to see 4 collections. Some of the things that surprised me the most were the choice of fabric they were using, with some of the clothes looking a bit more conventional and some of them a bit more out there, but overall the design aesthetic and the ideas behind them were very interesting. I know that some of these designers are going to be the great stars of the future, and who knows, maybe one of them will be the next Christian Siriano and come out of a show like Project Runway and really have a big impact.

Well that’s it for days 3 and 4. As you can see, my whole trip was packed with incredible experiences surrounding the fashion industry, and I was able to live in real life what these types of shows entail. They are hectic and crazy, but it’s how fast things move in this ever-changing environment that is fashion that really thrills me, and even though I don’t consider myself a brand or trendy person, I do like knowing what are the tendencies of the world and getting to know different points of views from the designers. I also made some really good friends, met a lot of people in the industry, and hopefully made the right connections to possibly find partnerships or collaborations in the near future. I’m really glad I had the opportunity of making this trip and I want to thank Arturo for joining me in this magical experience. This week, there’s another big fashion event coming up but this time in Seattle called Seattle Style Summit, which I was able to attend last year and had a really good time in. My friend Sydney Mintle from Gossip and Glamour organizes this event and she invited me to participate as moderator for the menswear breakout session, so I’m super excited of sharing some of my thoughts and also helping drive the conversation around this topic that I love so much. ¡Hola amigos! El día de hoy les quisiera relatar el resto de mi experiencia en New York Fashion Week del mes pasado. Recordarán de mi último post que terminó cuando fui a Couture Fashion Week. Bueno, el día sigueinte empezó con otra sesión de fotos, esta vez en los Spring Studios en Tribeca donde NYFW: The Shows dio lugar el fin de semana. Una vez más se encontraba conmigo mi amigo Arturo, y tomamos las siguientes fotos en la entrada de los estudios. De ahí tomamos el metro y nos dirigimos rumbo a uno de mis vecindarios favoritos en todo NYC: SoHo. SoHo es el área ubicada al sur de la Calle Houston (de ahí se deriva su nombre, South of Houston) y es principalmente una zona comercial. Algunas de mis tiendas favoitas como Topman, Club Monaco y J. Crew, entre otras, tienen tiendas en esta área. SoHo tiene además muchos restaurantes chic, galerías de arte, bares y es una de las áreas más conglomeradas y vivas de la ciudad durante el día.

Para mi sesión de fotos en SoHo con Arturo, decidí vestir un atuendo estilo vintage, muy a la Andy Warhol, inspirado por la misma ciudad de Nueva York. Para la chamarra, me puse mi nueva parka de Andrew Marc, la cual compré precisamente con la intención de protegerme del frío extremo durante este viaje. Esta chamarra es una maravilla, y puedes ponerte tan poco como una sóla capa de ropa debajo y seguir sintiéndote cálido y protegido cuando te la pones encima. La gorra tiene peluche falso, así que es tanto benévola con el medio ambiente como a la moda y cool. Para la parte superior, decidí ponerme un suéter cuello de tortuga en color turquesa de Topman junto con un par de pantalones con estampado de cuadritos en blanco y negro también de Topman. Para el calzado opté por usar mis botas estilo chukka a prueba de agua de Sperry Topsider que utilicé en casi todo mi viaje por Europa y para los lentes, por supuesto, me puse mis Ollie Quinn (que por cierto, me acaban de extender el código OQDIAZ para un 10% de descuento por un mes más, ¡así que ustedes pueden seguirlo utilizando! Asegúrense de comprar su par de gafas o lentes de sol muy pronto).

Después de tomar unas fotos en SoHo por un rato, Arturo y yo nos dimos cuenta de que había una multitud en la salida de uno de los edificios en Broadway, y descubrimos que el edificio tenía un letrero que decía Museo BET del MEME. Dado que ambos somos fans de las redes sociales, decidimos entrar y echarle un vistazo para ver que tenían en exposición. Era un lugar bastante ameno, donde hacían honor a algunos de los memes más virales y reconocibles de los últimos 10 años, y además nos presentaban la historia de las redes sociales tales como son Facebook, Instagram, Youtube y Twitter, las cuales han cambiado la manera en que interactuamos y nos comunicamos en la era del Internet. Tomamos un par de fotografías ahí y obtuvimos como recuerdo unas calcomanías con algunos de nuestros memes favoritos (uno de los míos es el de Neil DeGrasse-Tyson donde muestra sus dos palmas en desconcierto, y se la puse en versión calcomanía a mi laptop).

Tras caminar por SoHo fuimos a comer a uno de los restaurantes de Nueva York de mi chef favorito llamado Cosme. Cosme es un restaurante de comida mexicana en el distrito del Flat Iron, y es el mismo chef que es dueño de Pujol en la Ciudad de México, entonces estaba muy emocionado por probar la comida y ver el lugar. Obtuvimos nuestra reservación para ese mismo día, y me sorprendió desde un inicio lo lleno y popular que estaba. Bueno, más tarde me daría cuenta de porqué estaba tan lleno, ya que la comida estaba deliciosa y el lugar es exquisito. Pedimos las quesadillas de epazote junto con unas tostadas de chía estilo Japonés como entrada, y para el plato principal la famosa barbacoa del chef. Amigos, yo sé que hay muy buenos restaurantes mexicanos en la costa este, pero este es sin duda uno de los mejores a los que he ido. Si alguna vez se encuentran en el área les recomiendo ampliamente que vayan. ¡No se van a arrepentir! Después de comer (estábamos súper llenos después de tanta comida) mi amigo Arturo y yo tomamos un par de fotos más cerca del edificio Flat Iron y en el metro. Algunas de estas fotos son mis favoritas de todo el viaje, ya que literalmente gritan que son de Nueva York. Quisiera agradecerle enormemente a Arturo por acompañarme en este viaje y por haber tomado estas fotos. Mi día terminó con otra fiesta, esta vez la Couture Fashion Week Afterparty en el Crowne Plaza, lugar donde había sido el show de modas el día anterior, y tuve una noche muy relajante donde pude conocer a los diseñadores, modelos y asistentes del show.

El último día, tenía un evento más relacionado con la moda, el show de Small Boutique Fashion Week. Este show es muy especial ya que a diferencia de NYFW: The Shows, o Couture Fashion Week, aquí los diseñadores son todos diseñadores independientes, así que no cuentan con el gran presupuesto o con el apoyo de las grandes masrcas, pero aún así tienen muy buenas ideas y son muy creativos en sus diseños. Siempre me ha gustado apoyar a este tipo de diseñadores (la cual es una de las razones por las que me gusta mucho trabajar con marcas locales) así que estaba muy emocionado por ver que tenía para mostrar. Este evento tuvo lugar en el Studio 450 en el vecindario de Chelsea, cerca del distrito de meat packing. Debo admitir, en un principio me sentí algo sorprendido con el lugar ya que el edificio se veía algo viejo y esta área es muy industrial, pero terminó funcionando de maravilla ya que resultó ser una bodega gigante, pintada completamente de blanco en su interior. Esto hizo que el show se viera muy sofisticado y profesional, y la fotografía ahí dentro era muy fácil de tomar (una vez más, este edificio contaba con una increíble iluminación natural). Aquí pueden observar unas fotos de los 3 diseños que más me gustaron. En total eran 5 diseñadores, pero uno tuvo que cancelar así que sólo se presentaron 4 colecciones. Algunas de las cosas que más me sorprendieron de estos diseños fueron la elección de telas que usaban, con algunas de estas prendas siendo un poco más convencionales y otras un poco más vanguardistas, y sobre todo el diseño estético que tenían me pareció muy interesante. Estoy seguro que algunos de estos diseñadores son futuras estrellas, y quien sabe, igual y de aquí sale el próximo Christian Siriano y participan en Project Runway y de ahí se lanzan al éxito seguro.

Bueno eso fue todo para los días 3 y 4. Como pueden observar, mi viaje en su totalidad estuvo plagado de experiencias inolvidables alrededor de la industria de la moda, y pude vivir en carne propia lo que este tipo de shows representan. Son caóticos y ajetreados, pero es así de rápido como se mueve este ambiente y esto realmente me llena de adrenalina, y aunque yo no me considero una persona que se influencie demasiado por la moda y las marcas, me gusta saber cuáles son las tendencias que mueven a este gremio y llegar a conocer los diferentes puntos de vista de los diseñadores. Además hice de muy buenas amistades, y conocí a muchas personas de la industria, así que espero haber conectado con las personas adecuadas para quizá en un futuro igual y colaborar con alguno de ellos. Estoy muy contento de que pude realizar este viaje y quisiera agradecerle a Arturo por acompañarme en esta aventura mágica. Esta semana, se aproxima otro evento relacionado con la moda pero esta vez es aquí en Seattle y se llama Seattle Style Summit, un evento al que pude asistir el año pasado y que me dejó un muy buen sabor de boca. Mi amiga Sydney Mintle, de Gossip and Glamour, es la organizadora y ella misma me invitó a participar como moderador de la sesión corta sobre moda masculina, así que estoy muy feliz de poder compartir algunas de mis ideas y de guiar la conversación aldededor de este tema que tanto me apasiona. Mántenganse al pendiente de mis redes sociales para enterarse de más acerca de este evento, y si se encuentran en Seattle les recomiendo ampliamente que vayan, ya que es una gran oportunidad de conocer a otros bloggers e influencers y de hablar sobre esto que tanto nos gusta: el estilo personal.
