Fashion at Work

Hello peeps! Another Wednesday is here and today it’s time to talk about something very important which I haven’t mentioned as much here on Geek Q: the office attire. Many people have asked me what’s the best way to dress fashionably for work, and the truth is there is no correct answer to that question. It really depends on a lot of factors, such as the industry that you work in, the type of environment (are you mostly inside or outside?), the formality of the business, and of course, your personal style and what makes you comfortable. Personally, I don’t like too much formality in the way I dress to work. However, it’s not bad to throw something a little more upscale from time to time. Today, I’m going to give you 5 tips for dressing appropriately for your daily job.

1. Wear something that exudes confidence

Being confident is a quality that goes far in working environments. Much of the confidence that people feel from you, especially during first impressions, comes from two aspects: the way you talk and the way you look. The only way to feel confident in your clothes is to find your own style. Choose clothes that you feel comfortable in, that make you feel good, and that portray the image you want to portray. Think about body type, structure, symmetry, color palette, and most importantly, do it for yourself. This is the most personal advice, but I think it’s the most important. Once you figure this out, you’ll be happy with the way you look and that will translate as confidence.

2. Take some risk (but don’t over do it)

Everyone loves to have fun, and with clothes, the best way to have fun is to take some risks. Wear that print that you think might not work because it’s too loud or too colorful and tone it down with a sweater or vest in a neutral tone. Add some extra color to a formal, more serious look by using colorful socks. Pick an accessory (a scarf, pocket square, bracelet, watch, you name it!) and give a little extra to a simple button down and pants combination. Anything could work, but like everything in life, be measured. It’s that make it or break it moment.

3. Have variety in your look (especially shoes!)

If there’s something that doesn’t go out of style as quickly in the fashion world and it’s a must for making a great outfit it’s shoes. Invest some money in having at least one pair of dress shoes and one pair of casual shoes. If you want to be totally prepared, do two pairs of black shoes, dress and casual, and two pairs of brown shoes. That way you’ll show some variety and have more freedom when choosing depending on the color palette of your look. Remember to match your belt with the color of your shoes, so also have different belts. Finally, have a pair of sneakers for that casual day at work. They could be a no-no depending on your industry, but in my case, in the tech industry they’re totally fine.

4. Be work appropriate

One super important aspect is to wear something that is appropriate for your job. I don’t only mean don’t wear a t-shirt with a bad word, or don’t wear a piece that exposes your skin too much. I also mean, if you’re going to be outside in the sun some part of the day don’t wear something that will make you sweat a lot. If you’re going to be inside of an office, wear layers so that you can remove them as you see fit throughout the day. Give some thought about anything you want to try, and if you have some doubts whether it’s appropriate or not, the most likely is that it is not (use some common sense here).

5.  Choose the right fit

Whether it’s for your everyday pair of jeans, your button downs, your crew necks and sweaters, remember to always choose the right fit for you. Don’t choose clothes that are too tight because you will look uncomfortable. Also, avoid clothes that are too baggy because you will look sloppy and untidy. If you wear your right fit, you’ll be comfortable, look clean, and it will be clear you put some thought into your look. This is not only important for the work looks, it’s important every time!

¡Hola todos! Otro miércoles más ha llegado y es hora de hablar de algo muy importante que todavía no toco mucho en Geek Q: la vestimenta de oficina. Varias personas me han preguntado que cuál es la mejor manera de vestirse a la moda para el trabajo, y la verdad es que no hay una respuesta correcta a esa pregunta. Realmente depende de muchos factores, como son la industria en la que trabajas, el tipo de ambiente al que te expones (¿estás la mayoría del tiempo adentro o afuera?), la formalidad del negocio, y por supuesto, tu estilo personal y lo que te hace sentirte cómodo. Personalmente, no me gusta mucho la formalidad a la hora de vestirme para el trabajo. Sin embargo, no está mal de vez en vez ponerse algo un poco menos casual. El día de hoy, les daré 5 tips de cómo vestirte a la moda en el trabajo.

1. Viste algo que demuestre confianza

Tener confianza en uno mismo es una cualidad que te hace llegar muy lejos en ambientes de trabajo. Mucha de la confianza que las demás personas sienten de ti proviene de dos aspectos: la manera en la que hablas y la manera en que te ves. La única manera de sentirte en confianza con tu atuendo es encontrando tu propio estilo. Escoge ropa que te haga sentir cómodo en ella, que te haga sentirte bien contigo mismo y que demuestre la imagen que quieras dar de ti. Piensa en tu complexión, estructura, simetría, los colores, y sobre todo, házlo para complacerte a ti mismo. Este es el consejo más personal que les daré, pero creo que es el más importante. Una vez que encuentras la manera de sentirte feliz con la forma en que te ves, esto se traducirá a confianza

2. Toma riesgos (pero no demasiados)

A todos nos gusta divertirnos, y con la ropa, la mejor manera de divertirte es tomando riesgos. Usa ese patrón de camisa que crees que no funcionaría para el trabajo porque es muy llamativo o tiene muchos colores y trata de desvanecer ese impacto por medio de un suéter o un chaleco en tonos neutros. Agrega un poco de color a un atuendo muy formal por medio de los calcetines de colores. Escoge un accesorio (una bufanda, un pañuelo, una pulsera, reloj, lo que tú quieras) y dale ese extra a tu combinación favorita de camisa y pantalón. Casi cualquier cosa puede funcionar aquí, pero como todo en la vida, debe de hacerse con mesura. Es ese momento de tener el balance perfecto.

3. Ten variedad en tu look (especialmente en los zapatos)

Si hay algo en el mundo de la moda que no pasa tan rápido de temporada y que es necesario para hacer un buen outfit son los zapatos. Invierte un poco en tener al menos un par de zapatos de vestir y un par de zapatos casuales. Si quieres estar preparado para lo que sea, compra dos pares de zapatos negros, de vestir y casuales, y dos pares cafés o de otro color. De esa manera, mostrarás un poco de variedad y además tendrás más libertad al elegir dependiendo del color de tu atuendo. Recuerda además que el color de tu cinturón y tus zapatos debe ser el mismo, así que también compra diferentes cinturones. Finalmente, ten un par de tenis para ese día casual en el trabajo. Esto puede no ser lo adecuado dependiendo de la industria, pero en mi caso que es la industria de la tecnología, están muy bien.

4. Sé adecuado en el trabajo

Un aspecto súper imporante es vestir algo que sea adecuado a tu trabajo. Y no sólo me refiero a que no te pongas esa camiseta con una mala palabra, o que no te pongas esa prenda que enseñena demasiado. Me refiero, también, a que pienses si vas a estar afuera en el sol por gran parte del día, no te pongas algo que te vaya a hacer sudar mucho. Si vas a estar adentro en una oficina, vístete en capas para que te las puedas quitar a lo largo del día si necesitas. Piensa un poco en qué quieres ponerte, y si tienes dudas de si lo debes de usar en el trabajo o no, lo más probable es que no (usa tu sentido común para decidirlo).

5. Escoge la ropa que te quede

Ya sea para tu par de jeans de todos los días, tus camisas de botones, tus suéteres y camisas de cuello, recuerda siempre escoger lo que mejor te quede. No utilices ropa que te quede muy apretada porque no te vas a ver cómodo. También evita la ropa muy holgada porque va a parecer que te ves sucio y que no te cuidaste. Si usas la ropa de tu talla perfecta, te vas a sentir más cómodo, te verás limpio, y siempre será evidente que pusiste un poquito de esfuerzo en tu look. Esto no es importante sólo para el trabajo, sino para el 100% del tiempo.
