Merry Geek-mas!

‘Tis the season to be jolly my friends! Hello! I hope you’re having a great week so far and that you all had an extraordinary Thanksgiving break. We’re on to the last month of the year, and with it come the festivities, the parties, and the gift exchanges that usually happen during the holiday season. This year in particular I took a big break from previous years from doing Thanksgiving shopping (mainly in part because I was in Mexico during that weekend) but I had a similar experience to last year where I did most of my shopping online on Cyber Monday, and it was great! I feel like every year this is going to become more of a thing, and it’s interesting to see how people’s behavior has changed in regards to purchasing online.

One thing that can’t be missing in any holiday season is the use of holiday outfits. And for this post in particular, I wanted to show my fellow geek fashionistas (I know there’s a few of you out there somewhere) how you can be fashionable and represent your geek side this Christmas. And of course, I’m talking about a Christmas ugly sweater! My friend Edaena Salinas started her brand Sudo Shirt with the purpose of having interesting designs for software developers to wear. Designed by devs for devs, she wants to do out-of-the-box designs that are funny and familiar to any dev. Here you can see how she captured this perfectly by blending the usual ugly Christmas sweater design with a binary tree. Such a smart concept!

For this Christmas-inspired outfit I decided to pick the green Binary Tree sweater, since it’s one of the main colors of the holiday season. To avoid being too clichéd with red pants, I went for some light pink chinos from J. Crew which give it a little more color dimension, and also suit well the dark emerald color of the sweater. For the boots, I opted to wear my Tommy Hilfiger suede boots, which have been really useful these past very cold days, and as a pop of color I chose a pair of Fair Isle knit socks from J. Crew as well. We shot these photos outside Amazon campus in the ever-growing neighborhood of South Lake Union in Seattle, and I want to thank Eduardo, who’s Edaena’s brother, for taking these pics. Very well my friends, that’s going to be it for the day. In the upcoming days I’ll be preparing for my next adventure, since I’m headed to Northern Europe for the whole holiday break. From Paris to London, and then Ireland, Scotland, and Iceland, are just a few of the places I’ll be visiting with my family and I’m really happy to get to spend such a good quality time there with my folks. Lots of these places I’ve never been before, so I’m also eager to explore new grounds and to check off some countries off the bucket list (for instance, I’ve been wanting to go to Iceland for years!) There’s still one more week to go before starting my trip, so I still have to get a few things ready here in Seattle, but I’m really excited! I’ll leave you for now, not without reminding you to be stylish and to let your voice be heard. ¡Llego la temporada de fiestas! ¡Hola amigos! Espero que estén teniendo una semana excelente hasta ahora y que todos hayan disfrutado de un extraordinario receso de Día de Gracias. Estamos ya en el último mes del año, y con el vienen las posadas, las fiestas y los intercambios de regalo que usualmente suceden en temporada navideña. Este año en particular me tomé un pequeño break con respecto a años anteriores para las compras del Día de Gracias (en gran parte debido a que me encontraba en México ese fin de semana) pero tuve una experiencia algo similar a la del año pasado, en la que hice casi todas mis compras en Cyber Monday, ¡y estuvo genial! Siento que cada año esta se va a volver más la tendencia en estas fechas, y es interesante el ver como el comportamiento de la gente ha cambiado sobre los años con respecto a las compras en línea.

Algo que no puede faltar en las fiestas decembrinas es el uso de ropa que haga alusión a la época navideña. Y para este post en particular, quisiera enseñarles a mis compañeros geeks fashionistas (que sé que hay más de uno por ahí en algún lado) cómo pueden vestirse a la moda y representar su lado geek en esta Navidad. Por supuesto, ¡estoy hablando de un ugly sweater Navideño! Mi amiga Edaena Salinas comenzó su marca Sudo Shirt con el mero propósito de tener diseños interesantes que los desarrolladores de software pudieran vestir. Diseñada por devs y para devs, ella quería que su marca tuviera diseños no convencionales que fueran divertidos y a la vez familiares a cualquier desarrollador. Por ejemplo, aquí podemos ver como ella capturó esto de manera perfecta al combinar el diseño de un ugly sweater para Navidad con un árbol binario. ¡Qué concepto tan inteligente!

Para este look inspirado en la Navidad, decidí usar el suéter de árbol binario en color verde, ya que es uno de los colores principales de la época de fiestas. Como no quería verme muy cliché, evité el color rojo en los pantalones y me fui por un tono color rosa claro en unos chinos de J. Crew, para agregar así un poco más de dimensión al color, y también porque combina muy bien con el color verde esmeralda del suéter. Para las botas, opté por utilizar mis botas de gamuza Tommy Hilfiger, las cuales han sido muy útiles estos últimos días de mucho frío, y ofrecí un pequeño detalle colorido con las calcetas estilo Fair Isle de J. Crew. Tomamos estas fotografías afuera del campus de Amazon en la siempre creciente zona de South Lake Union en Seattle, y quisiera agradecer a Eduardo, el hermano de Edaena, por tomar estas fotos. ¿Qué les parece? Bueno amigos eso va a ser todo por hoy. En los siguientes días me estaré preparando para la siguiente aventura, ya que iré de viaje al norte de Europa durante estas vacaciones de Navidad y Año Nuevo. De París a Londres, yendo además a Irlanda, Escocia e Islandia, estos son tan sólo algunos de los lugares que estaré visitando con mi familia y estoy muy contento de poder pasar tanto tiempo de calidad con mis papás y hermanos. Es la primera vez que visito muchos de estos países, así que estoy ansioso por explorar nuevas tierras y tachar algunos países de mi lista (por ejemplo, desde hace años que tengo ganas de ir a Islandia, ¡y lo haré por primera vez!) Aún queda más de una semana antes de que comience mi viaje, así que todavía tengo que hacer algunas cosas aquí en Seattle antes de poder irme, ¡pero ya estoy muy emocionado! Los dejo por ahora, no sin antes recordarles que se vistan con estilo y que dejen que los demás escuchen su voz.
