Bellevue Fashion Week 2017: Independent Designer Runway Show

Before I start talking about this week’s post, I want to touch a very important subject. To me, the purpose of fashion has always been to lighten up people’s lives by giving them a way to portray their personality and sense of style. However, as much as I love fashion I know it is one of the most important things from the least important things in life. Over the past few weeks, two countries that I hold dearly to my heart have been severely battered by natural disasters. The earthquake in central Mexico of September 19th and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico have left hundreds of people dead, thousands injured, and more than a million whose lives have been impacted forever. The images and videos I’ve seen from the disaster have left me horrified, but I know that the people of these two countries are strong, and resilient, and we will get through these catastrophes. No earthquake in this planet, no hurricane, nor any disaster is enough to crumble the human spirit of these beautiful nations. However, for this to happen time needs to pass by, and a lot of help is going to be needed to rebuild. I want to ask you my followers to help out financially for this to happen. It is as easy as transferring some money to one of the institutions helping out (links provided at the end of this post). Any dollar (or peso) counts; no matter the amount, these people need our help. Myself and the people of Mexico and Puerto Rico will be eternally grateful for this.

Now, moving on to the main theme of this post. Last week, I had the opportunity of attending Bellevue Fashion Week for the first time in my life with fellow fashion blogger Avi Soor from SuitedSoor, which you may recognize from the Seattle Gents. I have to say, I didn’t know what to expect since as a Seattle blogger, most of the fashion-related events I have been to have usually been in Seattle, being it the largest city in the area where I live. It was surprising to know that Bellevue Fashion Week has been going on for the past ten years, and that this summer’s 5-day extravaganza would feature some of the most renowned designers in the Northwest fashion community. One of the events which I was excited the most to attend is the Independent Designer Runway Show, which took place at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue hotel. If you have seen the show Project Runway on TV, then you can get an idea of what the concept behind this contest is. Seven local designers are given the opportunity to present 10 looks in a professionally designed runway. They are given 6 months in advance to prepare their collection, and they receive reimbursement for some of the runway look materials, mentorship by a panel of fashion industry experts, and promotion during Bellevue Fashion Week. In the end, the winner, which is selected by the panel, is awarded $5000 and their collection will be displayed in Bellevue Square during the month of October. Additionally, the attendees get to vote for the fan favorite, which also receives a prize. Excited already?

Historically, the IDRS has featured some of the riskiest, most thought-provoking, innovative designs of the whole fashion week, so I was pretty interested in seeing what the designers had come up with for their collections. The first designer to present was Jersey Virago by Meagan Kruz. I had seen Meagan’s work previously in other runway shows like Seattle Fashion Week 2016, but here she blew me away with her collection. I knew she did fashionable swim wear, but this year I was also taken aback by seeing some of her dresses and cover-ups, which are, to say the least, really complex but beautiful. I liked her use of leather and some other non-conventional swim wear materials to give the look more sturdiness, and her girl a more powerful look. Next in line was Poppyseed, by Rebekah Adams. Rebekah’s customer is the pregnant woman that still wants to wear something fashionable and look nice all throughout her pregnancy. However, what impacted me the most about this collection was the versatility of the clothes. By adding some zippers to the dresses, for example, they became adjustable, and now they weren’t only for a pregnant woman but for before-and-after the pregnancy, and even for non-pregnant women. The colors of the collection are very now, and it feels fresh and young, yet sophisticated. Also the pieces can be mixed and matched freely, and give a completely different vibe with each look. This was definitely one of my favorite collections.

The following designer to showcase her line was Jennifer Charkow with Stone Crow Designs. Jennifer’s collection incorporated some darker tones, like black and red, and leather, to give her models a really fantastical, dreamy vibe. The collection reminded me to some of my favorite Tim Burton’s movies, with lots of drama, and lots of depth to the styling. The materials used looked chic and expensive, and the last dress with the long, flowy skirt was a showstopper. I’m excited to see more of her design in the future, because I feel that this Alexander McQueen-esque look is going to be everywhere, especially if she incorporates some more interesting materials such as metallic and chiffon. The next collection we got to see was LOURDES é EVA by Nora Suarez. Her point of view came across to me right away: this is for the tomboyish-flair woman that is not afraid to wear an oversized coat or a metallic sweatshirt and still looks incredible. Her style was also very feminine though, with warm pastel colors and white puffy fabrics incorporated into her looks. However, you could see the huge level of detail in each of these pieces, with the flattering long sleeves, bows, and turtlenecks grabbing your attention. I could see someone like Kylie or Kendall Jenner wearing one of these pieces and rocking the heck out of them. Nora has Mexican roots, and you could see how she incorporated the artistic, motherly style of Mexico with an American girl with understated elegance, and a willingness to take risks and be bold.

The next designer was Paloma Hurtado from Mexico City, with a collection named exactly after her. I was stoked to see two fellow Mexican fashionistas in the stage of Bellevue Fashion Week. Paloma’s design is, like the beautiful Mexican culture, full of color, mystery, and drama. Her juxtaposition of bright, primary colors with some black lace and black chiffon, give the illusion of watching a painting walk down the runway, which created a really nice effect on the spectators. Also, her use of different textiles, such as the black see-through mesh dress shown in the photo, portrays a lot of technique and knowledge of her girl and her customer. I was extremely pleased with her collection overall, and it’s so good to see some of my country in the fashion world. Good job both Nora and Paloma for raising the name of Mexico! Following Paloma, we had Gustave Apiti presenting Gustavo Apiti Couture. I had seen Gustave’s work in the Cars and Couture fashion show earlier this year, so I knew that we were in for a showstopper, and he did not disappoint. First of all, Gustave was the first designer to showcase some menswear design on his collection as well, so it was refreshing to see some menswear finally. His point of view came to me as very fashion-forward, yet wearable pieces, with mesh shirts, shiny sport jackets, chains and metal, and a great sense of style to put all of these together and not look like it is too much. I was left astonished with how many looks he showed that I wanted to buy, so he also appealed very well to the well-dressed, fashionable guy. I also had the pleasure of meeting him in person and he’s such a nice, grounded, inventive designer. Looking forward to see where he takes his design from here after having two successful runway shows in these past months.

Last but not least, we had Maria Venturini with the Chany Venturini collection. These looks were some of my favorite of the whole show. Her use of metallic imprints on fabric was wonderful to see down the runway, with all the lights reflected in every direction. Also, her use of proportion and fit was impecable, all of her models looked like a million bucks in these looks. However, what I liked the most about this collection was the easiness of it, you could see someone wearing one of these to a cocktail party, or a gala event, and it will all work out because the fit was right and the contour lines were flattering. She also seems like a very sweet person and her models looked amazing. Definitely someone to look out after for next years. And finally, as a closure to the show, we had Devon Yan, last year’s IDRS winner, with Devonation. You could clearly see how he won, his clothes are so current with what happened in fashion this year and they are merely works of art walking down the runway. The influence of his Hong Kong background can definitely be felt in these pieces, and the use of color and proportions was just spot-on. He is a real artist, and we’re lucky to have him as a Seattle designer in our community. I can’t wait to see more of his work in places like New York or LA Fashion Week. He’s that good! Andrew is moving away, but we wish him best of luck in his new endeavors.

Overall, the show was incredible and the lucky winner was… *drum roll*… POPPYSEED! You could see how she was the most ready to go to market, having her customer so well-identified and also with the versatility of these clothes for pregnant and non-pregnant women. It was also very now color-wise, proportion-wise, and the possibilities are endless for this young Tacoma-dwelling mom. Her motto is “Clothing that fits regardless” and I could definitely see that through her collection. Can’t wait to see her clothes at Bellevue Square next month! And fan favorite went to Chany Venturini. I was really excited for her and I know this will be a great push to continue her momentum. I’m sure we’ll know more from her soon too. I have to say, I was definitely impressed by the IDRS event and I think that we need more opportunities like these to let local designers show their work on the big stage. It is a huge way of promoting talent, and the work and sweat that goes behind all of this work doesn’t go unnoticed. Also I had a great time hanging out with fellow bloggers and meeting so many new friends at the event. Antes de empezar a hablar acerca del post de esta semana, quisiera tocar un tema muy importante. Para mí, el propósito de la moda siempre ha sido el iluminar la vida de la gente dándoles una forma de mostrar su personalidad y su estilo personal. Sin embargo, por más que amé la moda sé que es una de las cosas más importantes de las menos importantes en la vida. Durante estas últimas semanas, dos países que tengo muy presentes y cerca de mi corazón han sido víctimas de desastres naturales. El terremoto en el centro de México del 19 de septiembre y el huracán María en Puerto Rico han dejando cientos de personas fallecidas, miles de heridos y más de un millón de damnificados cuyas vidas han sido impactadas por siempre. Las imágenes y videos que he visto de ambos desastres me han dejado horrorizado, pero sé que los pueblos de estos dos países son fuertes y que vamos a salir triunfantes de estas catástrofes. Ningún terremoto en el planeta, ni huracán, ni cualquier desastre es suficiente para derrumbar el espíritu humano de estas dos naciones. Sin embargo, para que esto suceda se necesitará de mucho tiempo y esfuerzo, y mucha ayuda para reconstruirse. Quisiera pedirles de favor a ustedes mis lectores que ayuden de manera económica para que esto suceda. Es tan fácil como transferir algo de dinero a una de las instituciones que están ayudando con las labores de rescate y reconstrucción (algunas ligas se las pondré al final de este artículo). Cualquier dólar (o peso) cuenta; no importa la cantidad, estas personas necesitan de nuestra ayuda. Tanto yo como el pueblo de México y Puerto Rico les estaremos infinitamente agradecidos por esto.

Ahora sí, volviendo al tema principal de este post. La semana pasada, tuve la oportunidad de presenciar Bellevue Fashion Week por primera vez en mi vida, junto con mi colega blogger y amigo Avi Soor de SuitedSoor, quien puede que reconozcan como parte de los Seattle Gents. Tengo que admitir, no sabía que esperar de este evento ya que como un blogger de Seattle, la mayoría de los eventos relacionados con la moda en los que he sido partícipe han sido usualmente en la ciudad de Seattle, ya que es la ciudad más grande de la zona donde vivo. Me sorprendió bastante el saber que Bellevue Fashion Week tiene ya 10 años de historia y, que esta extravaganza veraniega de 5 días iba a contar con la presencia de algunos de los diseñadores más reconocidos de la comunidad de la moda en el Pacífico Noroeste. Uno de los eventos a los que tuve el placer de asistir y que más me emociona fue el Independent Designer Runway Show, el cual tuvo lugar en el hotel Hyatt Regency de Bellevue. Si alguno de ustedes ha visto el programa de televisión Project Runway, se darán una idea del concepto detrás de esta competencia. Siete diseñadores locales son elegidos para presentar una colección de 10 looks en una pasarela de modas profesional. Se les da 6 meses de anticipación para preparar su colección, y reciben tanto apoyo económico para algunos de los materiales, asesoría de un panel de mentores expertos en la industria de la moda y promoción durante Bellevue Fashion Week. Al finalizar la competencia, el ganador o ganadora, el cual es elegido por el panel, recibe un premio de $5000 y tiene la oportunidad de presentar su colección en Bellevue Square durante el mes de octubre. Adicionalmente, los asistentes tienen una forma de votar por el favorito de los fans, quien también recibe un premio. ¿Ya están emocionados por saber lo que pasó?

Históricamente, el IDRS ha presentado algunos de los diseños más arriesgados, interesantes e innovadores de toda la semana de la moda, así que yo estaba a la expectativa de ver qué habían incorporado estos diseñadores en sus colecciones. La primera diseñadora en presentar su colección fue Jersey Virago por Meagan Kruz. Ya había visto el trabajo de Meagan en otros shows de moda como Seattle Fashion Week 2016, pero en esta ocasión me impresionó bastante con su colección. Sabía que hacía trajes de baño de costura, pero este año lo que más me impresionó fue ver también algunos de sus vestidos y cubiertas que, para decir lo mínimo, eran muy complejas en construcción pero muy bellas también. Me gusta su uso del cuero y algunos otros materiales no convencionales en la elaboración de trajes de baño para darle más rigidez y hacer que la modelo se vea poderosa. La siguiente en la fila era Poppyseed, por Rebekah Adams. La cliente de Rebekah es la mujer embarazada que aún desea verse bien y a la moda durante su embarazo. No obstante, lo que me impactó más de esta colección es la versatilidad de estas piezas. Al añadir unos cierres a los costados de sus vestidos, por ejemplo, hacía que se volvieran ajustables, y ahora ya no sólo eran para la mujer embarazada sino también para la mujer que pasó por un embarazo o que ni siquiera está embarazada. Los colores de la colección son muy contemporáneos y se siente fresca y juvenil, sin dejar de ser sofisticada. Además las piezas se pueden intercambiar libremente y dar una vibra completamente diferente en cada look. Está fue sin duda una de mis colecciones favoritas.

La siguiente diseñadora en presentarnos su línea fue Jennifer Charkow de Stone Crow Designs. La colección de Jennifer incorporaba un tono más lúgubre y sombrío, con el negro y el rojo, y con la piel hacía que sus modelos tuvieran esta vibra de fantasía, como en un sueño. La colección me recordó a algunas de mis películas favoritas de Tim Burton, con mucho drama, y mucha profundidad en el estilo. Los materiales utilizados se veían chic y caros, y el último vestido con la falda larga y flotante acaparó las miradas de todos. Estoy muy emocionado por ver más de sus diseños en un futuro, ya que siento que este look a la Alexander McQueen va a estar en todos lados, especialmente si incorpora más materiales interesantes como telas metálicas y translúcidas. La siguiente colección que tuvimos la oportunidad de observar fue LOURDES é EVA de Nora Suárez. Su punto de vista se me hizo muy claro inmediatamente: esta ropa es para la mujer con el look más masculino, que no tiene miedo de utilizar abrigos en tallas grandes o sudaderas metálicas y aún así se ve increíble. Su estilo sin embargo es muy femenino, con tonos pastel más claros y con telas abultadas que incorporaba en sus looks. Sin embargo, se puede ver el gran nivel de detalle que hay detrás de cada una de estas piezas, con las mangas largas, los moños y los cuellos de tortuga llamando mucho la atención. Pudiera ver a alguien como Kylie o Kendall Jenner vistiendo una de estas piezas y viéndose como todas unas rock stars. Además, Nora tiene raíces mexicanas y se puede ver claramente como incorporó este sentido más artístico y maternal de México con una chica americana con una elegancia discreta y, unas ganas de tomar riesgos y ser fuerte.

Próxima a salir estaba la diseñadora Paloma Hurtado, de la Ciudad de México, con una colección homónima. Me dio mucho gusto el ver a dos compatriotas mexicanas fashionistas en las pasarelas de Bellevue Fashion Week. El diseño de Paloma es, como la hermosa cultura mexicana, lleno de vida, color, misterio y drama. La yuxtaposición de colores brillantes y primarios con algún holán negro y con seda negra daban la ilusión de estar viendo una pintura caminar por la pasarela, lo cual creo un efecto muy positivo en los espectadores. Además, su uso de diferentes textiles, como por ejemplo el vestido transparente en seda sobre otro vestido rosa en la foto, demuestra mucha técnica y conocimiento de su parte y sobre su clientela. Quedé maravillado con esta colección, y me encanta ver algo de mi país en el mundo de la moda. ¡Buen trabajo, Nora y Paloma, por alzar el nombre de México! Siguiendo a Paloma tenemos a Gustave Apiti presentando Gustavo Apiti Couture. Había visto el trabajo de Gustave previamente este año en el show de modas Cars and Couture, entonces sabía que estábamos por presenciar un gran espectáculo, y en efecto no nos defraudó. Primero que nada, Gustave fue el primer diseñador en presentar algo de moda masculina en su colección, así que fue muy refrescante el ver finalmente moda para hombres en este show. Su punto de vista me lo transmitió como una persona muy vanguardista, pero que a la vez puedes ponerte la ropa sin sentirte fuera de lugar, incorporando camisas de malla, vistosos y brillosos sacos, cadenas y metal, y con un excelente sentido del estilo para poner todo esto en un modelo sin que se vea como que es demasiado. Quedé atónito con cuántos looks que él presentó podría comprar y tener en mi guardarropa, así que logró capturar la atención de un fashionista que gusta de vestir bien. Tuve además el placer de conocerlo en persona y es una persona muy humilde, con los pies en la tierra, y con increíbles ideas, un inventor. No puedo esperar por ver hacia dónde lleva sus diseños después de haber tenido dos shows de pasarela exitosos en estos últimos meses.

Por último tenemos a María Venturini con la colección Chany Venturini. Estos atuendos fueron de mis predilectos de la noche. El uso de impresiones metálicas sobre tela fue algo que me maravilló al verlas caminar por la pasarela, con todos los reflejos que causaban las luces en todas direcciones, Además, su uso de proporción y el ajuste de la ropa era impecable, todas las modelos se veían como un millón de dólares en estos vestidos. Sin embargo, lo que más me gustó de esta colección fue la simplicidad del diseño, puedes ver a alguien vistiendo esto para un evento de cóctel, o para un evento de gala, y siempre va a verse bien la persona porque el ajuste es perfecto y las líneas de contorno estaban en los lugares adecuados. Además me pareció ser una persona muy dulce y sus modelos se veían increíbles. Definitivamente es alguien a quien debemos seguir en los próximos años. Y para clausurar el show, tuvimos al diseñador Devon Yan, quien ganó IDRS el año pasado, con su línea Devonation. Claramente podemos ver por qué ganó, su ropa es muy contemporánea con lo que esta sucediendo este año en el mundo de la moda y sus piezas son obras de arte engalanando la pasarela. Es evidente la influencia que tiene su bagaje hongkonés en este diseño, y el uso de color y proporciones daba en el clavo. Es un artista hecho y derecho y tenemos la fortuna de tener un diseñador tan talentoso aquí en Seattle. Ya puedo ver sus diseños siendo presentados en Fashion Week en Nueva York o en Los Ángeles. ¡Es así de bueno! Y no podemos dejar pasar el agradecer a Andrew Parsons Photography por haber hecho el excelente trabajo fotográfico que se presentó en este post. ¡Eres increíble amigo! Andrew se va a mudar, pero le deseamos lo mejor en sus nuevas aventuras.

En general, el show fue todo un éxito y sin más preámbulo, el gran ganador fue… *tarolazo*… ¡POPPYSEED! Pueden ver como era la que estaba más lista para salir al mercado, teniendo tan bien identificada a su clientela y también con la versatilidad que tienen estas prendas para mujeres tanto embarazadas como las que no lo están. Además, se siente muy al corriente con las tendencias de colores, proporciones, y las posibilidades son infinitas para esta joven madre que vive en la ciudad de Tacoma. Su slogan es “Ropa que te queda bien sin importar qué” y creo que lo podemos ver muy plasmado en su colección. No puedo esperar por ver sus piezas en Bellevue Square el mes siguiente. Y la favorita de los asistentes fue Chany Venturini. Estoy muy emocionado por ella y se que esto será un gran impulso para que continúe su éxito con momentum. Sé que sabremos más de ella muy próximamente. Tengo que decir, quedé gratamente impresionado por el IDRS y siento que se necesitan mas oportunidades como estas para dejar que los diseñadores locales presenten su trabajo en el escenario grande. Es una excelente forma de promover el talento; el trabajo y sudor detrás de cada una de estas colecciones no pasó desapercibido además. También me la pasé muy bien junto a mis otros compañeros bloggers y me encantó conocer a tantos nuevos amigos y amigas. Así que, ¡gracias Bellevue Fashion Week por invitarme y dejarme ser parte de este magnífico suceso! La próxima semana les platicaré de un evento más al que pude asistir en Bellevue Fashion Week, en el que tuve la dicha de conocer a nada más y nada menos que Christian Siriano, ganador de la temporada cuatro de Project Runway y aclamado diseñador de modas, así que no se despeguen durante las próximas semanas.
