Layering for Fall

Hi friends! How are you all today? As I promised last time, I’m back to writing personal style posts after attending a couple big fashion events and doing some traveling. Once again, I want to thank you for your warm response to my previous article on Seattle Fashion Week Day 2. It means a lot to me to see how the idea of Seattle being another fashion capital here in the US is starting to resonate with many people. One of my goals since the beginning of this year has been to broaden my influence in the local fashion community and to get involved in more and more of these events, and I must say that the effect I am seeing is great. There’s still a lot of room to grow though. For instance, I would like to see an even greater presence of menswear in fashion here in Seattle, because I see a big opportunity for this important market. I also think that it would be good for people in the tech industry to focus more on fashion. That was actually one of the main reasons why I started this blog, to see if I could help bridge that gap between fashion and technology, because I feel there’s a huge juncture between these two worlds that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

The topic of today’s post is once again streetstyle, but in something that’s very relevant to this time of the year and that many people want to know more about, which is layering clothes. In the in-between seasons of fall and spring knowing how to layer your clothes is key to creating good-looking outfits but also being prepared for the big changes in the weather coming ahead. For this reason, I decided to style a 3-in-1 look comprised of a Zara coat, an overgrown sweatshirt from H&M, and a wool sweater by O’Hanlon Mills from Urban Outfitters. There are 3 key points that have to be considered for this. The first one is choosing the right color palette. This doesn’t mean the whole outfit needs to be monochromatic, but that the colors need to harmonize with one another. One thing that looks really good is if your innermost and outermost layers are the same color or tone, and you have a different shade for your middle layer. Look at how visible the three layers of this outfit are because of the color selection, and in this way you can remove the middle one and guess what, you’re still looking good!

The second rule for layering is length and proportion. If all your clothes are the same length, then it’s very easy for one layer to get lost in the middle. The best way for achieving a cool, interesting layered outfit is by playing with proportions from one layer to another. See how the hoodie in my pics is always visible, even if I button-up or close my coat? Oversized sweaters and shorter jackets or coats are a great combination for fall. The final rule is clothes versatility. In a perfectly-layered outfit, each layer should be able to stand on its own and look good with or without the other layers. If throughout the day you remove the coat or jacket because the sun is out, or if you’re going inside a building and there’s only need for you to be in your innermost layer, or if you decide to quickly go out and put on the jacket with your inner layer, it should all work accordingly. Don’t choose clothes that depend on the whole outfit to look good, and make sure you check that all color/proportion combinations work together. What do you think? ¡Hola amigos! ¿Cómo están el día de hoy? Como lo prometido es deuda, estoy de regreso con mis posts de estilo personal tras asistir a un par de grandes eventos de moda y de viajar un poco. Una vez más, quisiera agradecerles el gran cariño que recibí en respuesta a mi artículo anterior sobre el segundo día en Seattle Fashion Week. Significa mucho para mí el ver como la idea de Seattle siendo una capital de la moda en Estados Unidos se vuelve una realidad y empieza a resonar cada vez más con la gente. Una de mis metas desde el inicio de este año fue el incrementar mi influencia en la comunidad local de moda e involucrarme cada vez más en este tipo de eventos y, debo admitir que el efecto que estoy viendo es grandioso. Aún nos queda mucho espacio por crecer. Por ejemplo, me gustaría ver una presencia todavía mayor de la moda masculina en Seattle porque veo una oportunidad importante para este mercado. También siento que sería bueno que la gente en la industria de la tecnología se enfoque más en la moda. Esa es una de las principales razones por las que decidí escribir este blog, para ver si podía ayudar a cerrar la brecha entre el mundo de la moda y la tecnología, ya que hay una gran disyuntiva entre estos dos mundos que requiere ser atendida más temprano que tarde.

El tema del día de hoy es una vez más el estilo urbano, pero en algo que es muy relevante a esta época del año y algo de lo que muchas personas quieren saber aún más, que es el cómo vestirse en capas. En los entre tiempos de primavera y otoño, el saber cómo combinar capas en tu ropa es clave para crear outfits que se vean bien pero que también estés preparado para los grandes cambios en el clima que estan por venir. Por esta razón, decidí acomodar este look tres en uno conformado por un abrigo de Zara, una sudadera larga de H&M y un suéter de lana hecho por O’Hanlon Mills de Urban Outfitter. Hay tres puntos principales que tienen que considerarse para lograr esto. El primero es escoger la paleta de colores adecuada. Esto no significa que todo el conjunto tiene que ser monocromático, sino que los colores tienen que armonizar entre ellos. Una cosa que se ve realmente bien es si tu capa interior y la capa exterior son del mismo color o tono, y eliges una sombra distinta para la capa intermedia. Vean lo visibles que son las tres capas de este look gracias a la selección de colores, y de esta manera, puedes remover la capa de en medio y adivina qué, ¡te sigues viendo bien!

La segunda regla para vestir en capas es el largo y la proporción. Si todas tus prentas son de la misma longitud, es muy fácil que una de las capas se pierda en el medio. La mejor manera de lograr un outfit que se vea cool e interesante es jugando con las proporciones entre las capas. ¿Pueden ver como la sudadera con gorra en mis fotos siempre está visible, aún si abrocho el botón de mi abrigo o si lo cierro? Los suéteres largos y las chamarras o abrigos más cortas son una excelente combinación para otoño. La última de las reglas es la versatilidad de tu ropa. En un outfit perfectamente balanceado en capas, cada una de estas debe de resaltar por sí misma y verse bien con o sin las otras capas. Si durante el día decides quitarte la chamarra o abrigo porque salió el sol o, si vas a entrar a un edificio y sólo es necesario que vistas la capa interior o, si decides salir rápidamente y sólo vistes la chamarra con la capa interior, todas estas combinaciones deben de funcionar independientemente. No eligas prendas que dependan del resto de tu outfit para verse bien y, asegúrate de revisar que las combinaciones de color/proporcíón entre todas las capas se vea bien. ¿Qué opinan? ¿Están listos para empezar a vestirse en capas esta temporada otoñal?
