Drop Dead Fashionista

Something that really excites me each year is dressing up for Halloween night. It’s that one night of the year when you can become anybody else for a few hours, and just let your creativity flow and let your spooky self come out. I’m not gonna lie, it took me a while to figure out what I was going to do this year because I was really busy this past month with both traveling and work. Then last week I attended a Seattle Fashion Networking event, where I was so happy to meet so many bloggers, photographers, designers, and people from the fashion industry in general, and I stumbled across my friends Arly, Sara, and Valerie at the event. There I told Valerie my situation and I asked her to help me come up with a costume for Halloween. Last year she transformed my face into Edward Scissorhands’s face and she did a wonderful job, so I knew I was in good hands when I asked for help.

Valerie is an amazing makeup artist (you can check out her other work on her page MakeupVP) and she came up with the really cool idea of becoming a dead person. Initially I was thrilled with the idea, we thought of something similar to Lady Gaga’s dancer in the Born This Way video. However, I also wanted something where I could portray my love for fashion, and it’s when I decided I was going to be not just a dead guy, but the most fashionable dead guy to ever live (“or die”). Basically, I was going to be a drop dead fashionista. It all started out by doing my makeup, which was crucial for the costume to be successful. Valerie and I looked online for some references and we found some really good examples of how to become a skull-faced person. Down below you can see the whole process of how I transformed into one.

First, Valerie drafted the jaws and teeth, eye sockets, and nose with a pencil, to be able to sketch the areas that later on would be filled out with the two main colors of the work: black and white. Later, she applied an initial white makeup base that would be the bone structure of the face, along with painting some teeth above and below my real mouth. Then, she applied a layer of black makeup to fill in the negative space in between the bones and cheeks, and she painted my nose and eye sockets in this same color. With the black makeup, she also started giving shape to the teeth by separating each from one another, and she also added some cracks to give it a more creepy look. Finally, she added some shades in darker colors to give 3-dimensionality to the face, and she also painted some final details on her work of art. For the outfit, I decided to go with a black suit with black shoes and a bow tie, and a pair of Ray-Bans. What do you think? Don’t you agree she did an amazing job with the makeup? There you go, as promised, here’s the final look of my Halloween costume for this year. I wore this to my friend’s housewarming Halloween party and to the clubs in Capitol Hill and everybody loved the makeup and the idea of the costume. Besides that, I was super happy that I was able to portray my love for fashion in such a spooky way thanks to Valerie’s help, and I loved how we both came up with this idea. That’s it for today, but I’m excited because this weekend, I’ll be flying to LA to one of my best friend’s wedding in a nice hotel in Hollywood Hills. I hope that this time I can write my post on wedding outfits since the weather is looking great there: 75 degrees and sunny, clear skies. That sounds absolutely fantastic, especially with the cold weather we’ve been having lately here in Seattle. Expect that and more to come just here on Geek Q. Algo que realmente me emociona cada año es disfrazarme para la noche de brujas. Y es que esa es la única noche del año donde podemos convertirnos en alguien más por un par de horas, y dejar nuestra creatividad fluir y que ese ser aterrador dentro de nosotros salga a la luz. No les voy a mentir, me tomó un rato descifrar de qué me iba a disfrazar este año porque he estado muy ocupado últimamente con cosas del trabajo y con viajes. La semana pasada asistí a un evento de Seattle Fashion Networking, donde conocí a bastantes otros bloggers, fotógrafos, diseñadores, y gente del mundo de la moda en general, y me topé a mis amigas Arly, Sara y Valerie en el evento. Ahí le dije a Valerie mi situación y le pedí que me ayudará a crear un disfraz para Halloween. El año pasado ella fue la que transformó mi cara en la de Edward Scissorhands e hizo un trabajo impresionante, así que sabía que estaba en buenas manos al pedirle ayuda a ella.

Valerie es una excelente artista de maquillaje (de hecho pueden ver su trabajo en su página MakeupVP) y se le ocurrió la idea de convertirme en una persona muerta. Inicialmente me encantó la idea, pensamos en hacer algo similar al bailarín de Lady Gaga en el video de Born This Way. Sin embargo, yo también quería disfrazarme de algo relacionado con la moda, y fue entonces cuando se me ocurrió la idea de no sólo transformarme en una persona muerta, sino en la persona muerta más a la moda que jamás haya vivido (“o muerto”). Básicamente, decidí que me disfrazaría de drop dead fashionista. Todo empezó con mi maquillaje, el cual era súper importante para que el resto del disfraz sea exitoso. Valerie buscó en línea algunas referencias y encontramos ejemplos muy padres de cómo hacer una persona con cara de calavera. Aquí pueden ver el proceso de como me transformé en una de ellas.

Primero, Valerie dibujó la mandíbula y los dientes, las cuencas de los ojos y la nariz con un lápiz, para poder hacer el bosquejo de lo que más tarde rellenaría con los dos colores principales: el blanco y el negro. Después, aplicó una capa inicial de maquillaje blanco que conformaría la estructura ósea de la cara, junto con unos dientes arriba y debajo de mi boca verdadera. Luego, aplicó una capa de maquillaje negro para cubrir el espacio negativo entre los huesos y las mejillas, y pintó mi nariz y ojos con este mismo color. Con el maquillaje negro, también comenzó a dar forma a los dientes, separándolos uno de otro, y agregó unas grietas para darle un look más aterrador. Finalmente, colocó un par de sombras en tonos oscuros para darle tridimensionalidad a la cara, y pintó algunos detalles finales en su obra de arte. Para el outfit, decidí ponerme un traje negro con zapatos negros, un moño y un par de lentes Ray-Ban. ¿Qué opinan? ¿A poco no le quedó increíble el maquillaje? Ahí tienen, como prometí anteriormente, el look final de mi disfraz de Halloween de este año. Me fui disfrazado así a la fiesta de housewarming de Halloween de unos amigos y a los antros en Capitol Hill y a todo cuanto veía le encantó el maquillaje y la idea detrás del disfraz. Además de eso, estoy muy feliz de que pude demostrar mi amor por la moda de una forma tan terrorífica gracias a la ayuda de Valerie, y me encantó como llegamos a esta idea juntos. Eso es todo por hoy, pero les comentó que estoy muy emocionado ya que este fin de semana viajaré a Los Ángeles a la boda de uno de mis mejores amigos en un hotel en Hollywood Hills. Espero que esta vez si pueda escribir mi post sobre conjuntos para bodas, ya que el clima se está viendo espectacular: 25 grados y cielo despejado y soleado. Eso suena increíble en este momento, especialmente porque en Seattle ya ha estado haciendo mucho frío últimamente. Esperen eso y mucho más sólo aquí en Geek Q.
